Anyone know anything about the Jag 4.0 V8, as fitted to the XK8 circa year 2000? Good or bad? What about the rest of the car?

There is something terribly crap about the engine. I had an XJR out from my club a few weeks ago and it wasn't there when I went to get it. Both HGs had gone and there was something up with the cylinders. Lost compression on all 8. Something to do with the metal they used.

Edit: Here you go Andy. Just be careful.

Edit again: My dad had an XK8 with that engine and it was great.

XJRs different though isn't it? More powerful highly stressed. Is it a different engine to the XK?

<edit> Sancho, looks like its just the R variants with problems according to that article, and then not all of them. The ~300BHP from the NA 4.0 would be enough for me

It's just a long term plan at the mo. At least three years away I guess, but the more I look at them, the more I fall in love, and they do seem to be a bit of a bargain for what you're getting. I guess when I'm in a position to look seriously, I'd probably be looking at 2006 - 2007 anyway.

            Same engine, just supercharged.

From what I can see, get a blowby test and if it passes, it's fine. Not so much sulphur in fuel now.

They just dont come much better looking than this really do they? (though I prefer the original alloys to these)

              Unless they're one of these...

All of them, but the R is indeed at far more risk. Like I said, my dad had one (a convertible) and it was great. Only sold it because he bought a Ferrari 360.

Not much room in the back, but who gives a toss?

The engine is built in Bridgend. The benchmark Ford aimed for was the Lexus V8 - small, compact, good output for capacity, not over stressed etc. Strange how they ended up at 4.0litres a la 1UZ.

The updated engine is now at 4.4 litres and used in most of the old Ford empire premium automotive group (PAG) - RR, LR, Jaguar etc.

Your best bet would be a late model year of the old 4.0 lump N/A. I've heard some stories about the supercharged engines going pop early - a couple of my mates work at the engine plant, one of them in the quality control department.
