  • Green Lane Question

Im hoping to go on one of the organised outings this year with you lot "if you'll let me". I have a few questions first though!

    1, my surf is standard.

2, im also on road tyres "hopefully A/T's before the outing".

3, really don't want to destroy the surf if possible. "its my work horse too"

4, i don't want to be a pain & hold everybody up cos i keep getting stuck.

I do a little off roading but only very light stuff "tracks & a bit of wet grass". Should i leave it to the experts & just read about it on here or would i be ok.
If its not broke don't fix it.

The reason i asked is because all the pics of the days out seem to be of surfs with 2" & 4" lifts with M/T's & winches, i feel as if i would be out of my depth.

+2" springs (standard shocks), tweaked torsion bars, m/ts & snorkel
                http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...ne_HighHalden/

surfs of various guises on this run, mine was as above, tintin i believe was absolutely standard, the ford ranger (mcblip) was absolutely standard http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...es%2025_11_07/ no one had any problems (except gwh who didn't make it up a little hill with his 5" lift and 33" kumhos)

i was absolutely standard here apart from the m/ts
                http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...ds%2006_08_06/

this is as in the first album http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...nd%2001_04_07/

                and finally...

...even with 3rd gen parts fitted they're still capable trucks (thanks Chris)

so you don't need to be spending hundreds to get a capable truck, a/ts are absolutely fine in the dry, and okay in the wet with care. Let's put it this way, your more than welcome on any of my runs standard or otherwise, and there's always the option to go round anything you don't like the look of. If you get to an obstacle and you don't fancy it, don't do it is the basic rule.

the one's that look dodgy are me playing at woodlands, it's my local pay & play site and it's routes i've done before, you kinda get to know them and have a good idea of what you and your vehicle can & can't do. gwh, tintin and i think someone else played up there in the snow last april, i missed it coz i was in skegness.

In that respect i think pay & play sites are a great way to start getting into offroading. Most of them are signposted with routes graded from easy to extreme, so you just stay on easy til you start ot get confident, and in the most part they're little more than slightly rutted tracks, with the odd tree root or puddle and occasional small hole to drop a wheel into, which can be quite unnerving in itself to start with.

Im definatly going to try one this year, besides the off roading it looks like a good day out with plenty of banter, im sure you've all got a few tails to tell about each other.
