  • The Plains strikes again

Finally got round to getting truck out of garage to clean it following Monday's jaunt around the plains

Went to get road tyre's from back of garage to put them back on and noticed a fresh patch of oil were front of truck was sitting. Looked to be approx in line with and central to front wheels.

Had a crawl under the truck and sure enough the front diff is now leaking fluid from the offside. It looks like it is coming from where the drive shaft enters the diff.

Question is is this all I need to replace Diff Seal and can it be done with diff in place ? or does it have to come out ?

You will need to remove the shaft to get the seal in place. Unless you cut it and do it in two halves
It's not that big a job to pop the shaft out Andy, just a bit fiddly and too bl00dy cold to be doin it right now.
While you're under there, mae sure the breather isn't blocked or even better, fit some extended breathers.
And i think you are looking at the prop seal there too not the shaft one.

I'm confused is it Drive shaft seal or prop shaft seal?

That is why i am glad i have not got a surf sometimes, always something breaks when you go out with bio/stein, and does not necessarily just have to be the plain......................... .....
        Working at last.......

To be honest i'm not sure yet, but it does seem to be coming from the drive shaft side of diff.

I will be taking truck in for a full chassis clean tomorrow, so will get a better look when it is up on the ramp.

Diff breathers are already lined up just not had time or inclination to fit them due to work and weather. Looks like i am going to be getting a little cold over the next weekend or two. May wait and see if weather warms up a little first

Cheers for correcting link i'd been looking through them all and obviously selected wrong one

I have replaced the rear "propshaft to diff" seal and it was not a big deal, never replaced the front one though.

I have had the drive shafts out (to replace CV boots) and it's no fun at all, on mine they only just come out with loads of messing around, there is a guide somewhere with photos

Not always true it took them two attempts to do this to mine

Sod's law says somethings gotta go sooner or later and this is first thing since I've owned the truck so no complaints. From looks of things it is only minor issue just big on labour

Yes it was then, when I got stranded crossing tracks, and the LR was owned by a good friend and member here.
