  • Low TAX cars, Help

    Hi all
I'm after a car for the wife, with low tax and good economy, at the moment she has a Vauxhall Astra SRI Diesel 150bhp, which is not to good on fuel 35 mpg average, no to good as she is a driving instructor, so I'm after a car with good economy, reliable and low tax, any recommendations, or is there a a list of cars with low tax?

Its going to be used as a driving instruction car so it needs to be fairly new and reliable.

PS the Astra will go for PX

Ideally I'm not looking at spending to much, the Astra is a 07 plate March i think, so I'm not sure what i would get for that, but don't want to add much to it.

Will do, quite like them myself, nearly had one a few years ago, the 2litre one, ended up with a Alfa 147 in the end.

Too pricey, not all that green and not all that efficient.

I would go for the IQ. Diesels and hybrids are no good for learners - too hard to stall

would second the vote for the renault clio.

cracking little car, and quite popular with driving instructors (also means he-man dual controls are often fitted, so must be easy to fit if that makes any sense!).

I used to work for renault, and used to enjoy the little diesel clios, available in 68, 86 and 106 bhp variants of the same engine, plus i was geniunly getting over 50mpg in each.

Getting around 35 on the Astra, but it is fun 1.9TDI SRI 150bhp, not bad for a learner car, group 12 insurance though.

out of the list in post 2 the polo would be my choice, both from a personal preference point of view, and from the cars i looked at with driving instructing in mind.

Look at some thing like Toyota Aigo , Citreon C1 , or a 107 all the
same car mechanically but the french ones are cheaper than the
                          Toyota .

Loads of MPG cheap tax and insurance and nice and small for
the pupils on the lessons ?

Strongly agree, Ive got the 80 bhp version (for the age I bought they did the same engine with 65, 80 or 100) and would thoroughly recommend it, bought it on a 05 plate with 30k on the clock for 5 grand, done 10,000miles since in 6 months and it's been great. It normally shows about 70mpg, closer to 80mpg on motorway and about 60mpg for local journeys (although we do drive it quite careful and don't live in a heavy traffic area). We hunted for one with aircon and could have paid abit less for one without as aircon seems a bit rare on them.

I have the 68 bhp version and can honestly say i've never had less than 54mpg from it. Keep regular records due to claiming work mileage on it
