Help, Dashboard light for 4wd on/off thinks its a xmas tree light,

Its started flashing on and off, the same as when 4wd is engaged and disengaged but it wont stop.

I have tried putting it in and out of 4wd which stops it for a few seconds then it starts flashing again.

I can hear something engaging / trying to engage but not sure if its in properly.

Is it a sensor relay or contact switch on the switch over assembly? or something else? and any advice on how to fix it?

    its a 3gen, auto

    Thanks.

Be careful... AFAICS, the diff is locked and the transmission in 4wd when the light is flashing.

My auto transmission doesn't like being put into 4wd or back when moving... only when stationary and in neutral.

If it is stuck in the transition between 4wd and 2wd, then I found stopping, then going through all the transfer lever options, then back to 2wd (button out) then into drive / N / reverse, then drive forwards moving the steering wheel from side to side or some combination thereof will put the transmission back into 2wd.

      thanks

I have tried that as it used to get stuck when i first got the truck but never like this before and recently its been fine.

Also the light just came on i have not used the 4wd switch for about 1 week but this morning the light was flashing and wont stop.

I'm thinking its more of an electrical switch gone faulty than the mechanical side. I'm guessing the 4wd actuator is a vacuum pump, if so could it be a fault with the pump thats showing as the lights flashing?

If anyone has the schematics of the 4wd system id be grateful.

Not sure if this is for a 3rd gen or not

Mine has always been a bit sticky to operate, but I have just had the transmission lubed and it’s much better although this could be a coincidence. I would be interested in how you get on.

          excellent thanks,

          its now all sorted!

It was one of the vacuum hoses had split and come off the actuator. Hopefully it hasn't sucked any shit into the vacuum pump and wreck that. But so far so good.

Thanks for all the links I have saved them as favorites.

How did you lube the transmission and what with?

Here is the link for the lubrication points on the prop shaft it tells you what grease to use and where, although the greasing points may be differ slightly on a 3rd gen http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/downloads/Surf%20Greasing%20Points.pdf
If you haven’t been doing this regularly then this may be of interest. http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=49564&highlig ht=Grease+points
            Glad to hear you’re sorted.

Blimy, ill be greasing my nipples over xmas,

The fault with the 4wd controller has briefly come on again so there might be another issue with it. When its faulty it makes a clicking noise under the passanger foot well, It might just still be sulking from having the vacume line removed so ill see if it sorts itself out.

Thanks for all the advice and links.
