Well just to throw a cat amongst the pigeons Christmas was a roman festival which the church took over several hundred years ago. The traditions of gift giving and the character of santa claus are of pagan decent. Father Christmas and Santa Claus were originally two completely different characters descended from different traditions and merged into one.

As a Christian i find christmas to be possibly the most depressing time of year, watching even the church itself buy into the commercialism that's become so intwined in the celebrations it's actually that that people celebrate more than the birth of Christ, which incedentally gives the festival it's name and is what the calendar we've been using for the last 2008 years (though in reality it's closer to 1500 years...) is based on. But being that i find it as such, it doesn't surprise me that non-christians can't stand it either.

I thought it was totally Paganistic, therefore pre-dating Romas?

      Every day's a school day.

                Who's offering humps?

Anyway, I am pretty much agnostic but don't find anything in the least bit offensive about Christmas. I don't care where it came from, I'm just happy to have the days off and for everyone else to at the same time so I can see family and catch up with friends.

Anyway, think of it as the winter solstice (which is a fact of nature) and get drinking.

Wonder if the bible will be sold in the fiction section this year? I find Lord Of The Rings to be a more believable story, it even reads better the other one is so stop start.

That sounds like someone who hasn't read Lord of the Rings. God, it's dull.

Only to the illiterate .........Tolkin wove alot of old english and Norse myths and Ledgens into it, and alot was written in the darkest decades of the 20th century . It's alot better than C s Lewis's bible bashing Narnia books.

That's the most error-strewn paragraph I have ever seen from someone accusing someone else of being illiterate.....

I agree it's a lot better than that Narnia nonsense, I was just saying it's pretty hard work.

I'm an atheist and I love christmas, we don't associate it with anything religous, but look at it as a special time of year where I get lots of ace prezzies and I buy my wife some slippers, very fair.

You are aware that Christmas is actually a hi-jack Roman celebration. Designed to bring joy and have many parties in the middle of our dismal winter.

p.s. I have no kids so can bah humbug till my hearts content.
