  • knocking CV, what to do?

sorry for posting here in general but i get more responcees,
anyway, my front left inner CV is knocking when i go in a straight line and even more so when i turn left,
i have had a look and the inner CV boot has totally gone,
i would normally replace the boots but i am meant to be driving up to Scotland in 2 days, so would fitting freewheeling hubs solve the problem until i drive up there and then fit the new boots?
    thanks
    will

I would have thought so. Is the boot so toasted that you can't re-grease and gaffer tape it as a temporary mend?

If the CV is knocking, it will probably need replacing when you do the boots. If you aren't going to need 4WD, just remove the joint for now. In fact, can you remove the outer drive flange (the one with the 6 bolts) and just let it spin in the bronze bushes so the wheel isn't turning it? I would have thought that would be OK.

get a second hand shaft from stormy or supersurf, they only take ten minutes to fit.all shafts are the same no matter what surf they have come from.

Taking the outer drive plate (for want of a better word) off is the same as a freewheeling hub disconnected isn't it? All that does is slides the drive spline off the shaft.

thanks m8, it was nice and snowy on the way up and we stupidly camped out up a mountain 700m up in the lake district , it was ###### freezing.

2 man tent + 2 men + 1 no camping gear except for tent = 1 very bad nights sleep

thanks for the invite, i will look into Drumclog and let you know.
                      thanks
                      will

p.s the truck made it up fine, i'm just glad i didn't need 4wheel drive!!!

Possibly not - a modern 2 man tent with three bodies in will be surprisingly warm compared to a tin truck (Assuming you don't just leave it running with the heater on of course !)

Life is too important to take seriously !
