how much better is the 3.0 than the 2.4

The 3.0 is better for the same reasons others have said. Surprised that Dieselboy seems to be suggesting that the 2.4 is better in terms of mpg as you have to rag the knackers off it to beat continental drift away from the traffic lights!

my 2.4 is perfectly fast enough for me. it can do 90mph if i waited long enough on the motorway, but happily does 70 - 80mph.
when i was cruising around france doing 55mph i managed 27mpg which was good.
but if you need to do some overtaking in a 2.4, be careful. you need a run up.

i had a modified 325i once, and someone started harrassing me on the motorway back from dover one night. there was no other cars around, and i was doing like 65mph in the middle lane (i dont normally do that, but i was finding it hard to concentrate / stay awake)
this other car flashed me, overtook me then slammed on his brakes and slowed down to about 40... then wouldnt let me overtake or go round.
so i put it in 3rd and stuck at 140mph for about 10 mins just to get away
you couldnt do that in a 2.4.
