Protecting my underside!

After reading the other New surf owner thread I had a couple of questions about this.
So import vehicles are not properly salt protected?
Exactly what needs to be done?
Steam wash, waxoyl and then underseal (in that order?)?

Sounds like an easy (but frustrating) job so I'd rather do it myself but out of interest how much would someone charge to do it?

Undersealing is only of any theoretical use when applied to a new, clean, dry, and unblemished chassis. There is a school of thought that says applying it at all is wrong, and I'm of that opinion. If something is eating your metalwork under the black gunge, how can you tell? Others say that it encourages condensation between the coating and the metal, and again it's happening where you can't see it. Waxoyl is the way to go, and top it up every autumn if you really love your Surf.

I agree with john. even a tiny rust spot will grow under the coating. waxoyl forms a coating which stop air getting to the metal, any rust etc and therefore no oxidation of the metal cannot take place

I used waxoyl on an old S3 landie. the chassis had more repair than original parts. I did need to touch it again for five years until I sold it.

Yes I would concur with that, Waxoyl only, no underseal on top. Underseal probably wouldn't stick to waxoyl anyway.

I waxoyled my chassis the other day. It is a bugger of a job even with an air line but well worth it. I went through three cans of the stuff but it was a good job. I tend to thin waxoyl down a bit as well.

Remember to mask around the side steps etc so you can do them otherwise it will blow all over your arches. I know from bitter experience and half an hour with white spirit!!

You should certainly do it now before the bad weather really comes in.

So the best thing to do is give it a bloody good wash and then cover everything in this Waxoyled?

The chassis has to be clean and completely dry. You can get it in spray cans or cans that fit onto a spray gun and airline. From what I can remember you can even brush it on. I find that using a sprayer and airline and thinning it down with 20% thinners makes it go the furthest.

I spray it liberally over everything. It wiffs a bit off the sxhaust but i've never had it catch fire yet and i've done it on quite a few imports

it is best to stand it in a bucket of hot water for a while before you spray it, you will find it sprays alot easier, however if you thin it down it should be done with white spirit as waxoyl is not thinner based

did'nt know that, I've always used cellulose thinners without any problems.

Obviously I can do it but if the price isnt too high I might let them spend the weekend under my wheels

My 93 Surf underside was 'clean enough to eat off' when I got it so I made it a priority to under seal it before a UK winter.

I picked a hot summer day and sprayed Waxoyl into the chasis frame, body panels and any hard to get at areas (eg behind the petrol tank) on the underbody. The rest of the underbody was thickly painted with Waxoly Underbody Seal (basicly thick, black Waxoyl). I have repainted the areas which get scrubed off after off-roading. Remember underbody sealing is NOT something you can do once and forget! It needs needs inspection and retouching if necessary.

Also- don't forget the chrome bumpers of your Surf. Mine were starting peel chrome inside so I droped them off. Rust treated them properly, overpainted and then Waxolyed over that. Worth doing as these are the most susceptable parts to rusting.

Anyway- I'll let you know in five years time if I got it right! I'd suggest any treatment is better than none. The local import garage sprays the underside of their imports with the thin black Waxyol (mainly so they can see where they have sprayed apparently!). They quoted £200 to do the Surf. You can buy a hand pump spray for £30 from Halfords. It's messy but you'll have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and knowing you didn't miss anywhere vital.

i use one of these to spray the waxoyl but you need a compressor, a small one will do, i use an empty schultz or stonechip can and pour the waxoyl into it which screws straight onto the gun
