Wont pick up the police. They us TETRA and it's secure.

I'm more after the civil and military airbands and whatever else I can find.

Mick, you've got some kit there eh? I'm trying to avoid getting in to it too deeply as I already have enough hobbies! I have a few old Singer Stoddard / Eaton EMC receivers here - £20k+ a piece. I've been tempted to hook up an antenna to those and have a play, but the scanner looks a lot more convenient!

They're only worth anything to people who want them - and that is pretty much only EMC test houses, and we're onto £100k Rhode & Schwartze ESIB jobbies these days.

I've been listening to Birmingham International tower on one of ours today

Yeah, have seen them - around the £300 mark? Presumably they listen to the SSR transponders? A nice toy, but will have to wait. The scanner arrived today. The ###### manual is like war & peace! Will keep me quiet for a few evenings!
