  • why the f$%k do nothing go straightforward!

Just spent the last 5 hours trying to fit my 2" body lift with my dad!!

other than problems with a leaking jack, and the usual stiff nuts, its just been a nightmare!

had to get the angle grinder out on the front bumper to make it fit. had to make some shims out of pipe as some of the bolt were too long.

then found the fan housing fouled the fan once it was lifted, so had to wrestle to get the bottom section of that off.

after working for 5 hours went to drive home to find the steering as stiff as anything. tried to free it off where it goes through the bulkhead, but it still makes a nasty noise, and i'm not sure quite where from, definatly somewhere inside the cab.

i've basically lost my rag with it, why did i even bother!! I had hoped to fit my new springs n crank up the torsion bars while i was at it, but that well out of the window today.

plus the wife is totally ####ed off cos i told her i'd be free by 1 at the latest, and she obviously doesn't see the reason for me wanting 33" tyres in the first place.

    GGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

    Mart

PS. any suggestions for sorting the steering issue?
Just trying to raise my postcount!

In the engine bay there is a UJ on the steering.

Undo one of the nuts an give the wheel a few turns. It should slacken off a bit.

    Tighten up an your done.

I think you may also need to make the hole in the bulkhead, that the steering column goes through, bigger. I've read that some of the guys who have done a 2" lift have had to file the edge of the hole.
'Tis better to sting than to be stung!

there are 3 joints to slacken off on the steering column 1 under the bonnet and 2 under the dash.slacken all 3 and then let it self adjust. You should need to make the hole gigger in the bulkhead aswell like already mentioned.Make sure the hi/lo lever goes in and out of the ratios properly as you may need to make the hole in the floor a fraction bigger also

I thought it was pretty straight forward! I've just got a 2" kit myself and was hoping to do it myself. I don't like the sound of this. Hope you get it sorted. This is starting to put me off!

Read a few write up's on how its done mate.

Try an get to the point where if someone said "how do i do a bodylift" you'd be able to explain. If you know exactly whats going to happen etc then you can sort it out before its an issue.

Slacken the steering before you start, Remove the lower rad cowl before you start. just stuff like that.

It should be straight forward, if i can do it on my own believe me anyone can, did you not have a good read up on previous write ups on lifting? dont know what size lift your doing but assumeing it's 2" you should'nt encounter any major probs, it pays to go round a week before you start and spray WD on all the mounting bolts/nuts, when you ready to start remove the lower rad shroud, loosen up all three joints on the steering columb, loosen the fuel filler hose to the tank, you'll need to remove the plastic shoit shield in the off side rear wing), remove the gear shift plate from the tunnel, spend some time going round and check if anything is going to foul as the body lifts up, unclip the rubber splash shields that clip on the inner wing to the chassi, break lines should be ok as their coiled but keep an eye on em as it goes up, loosen all mounts and jack one side at a time just enough to slip the new mounts in, fit the bolts and do em hand tight, then do the other side, when your sure all ok tighten em all up and check round that all ok, i fitted mounts that stien supply'd me and they were 4" spacers!! so i had to cut em all down to 2" plus the "oversize" bolts were also longer so i had to cut offcuts of spacer to use as spacers to pack out the longer bolts, plus i had to ream out the metal tube inserts inside the mounts to take the oversize bolts, a real b@stard!

once it's all bolted up, jack up the front and spin the steering wheel to let the columb sort itself out, then check that the clamps are "grabbing" enough spline and not "nearly out of one and right in the others, you can slide the columb up or down to centralise it in the clamps, if in doubt you'll need to get an entension tube welded up to extend the shaft a bit but i had no prob with a lift of 2", also you may need to remove some metal where the columb passes through the bulkhead, certainly if the lifts over 2", mine just rubbs but not a prob
next check the hi/lo shift dose'nt foul on the trans tunnel, some do some dont, mine did so you may need to grind some metal off the tunnel so it shifts free, replace the shift plate and leaver assembly and check it all moves ok,
next centralise the fuel rubber hose and retighten, anything over 2" lift you'll need a longer hose,
leave the rad lower shroud off, (i had to grind mine off) you can leave the rad where it is or make some simple plates to raise it 2", up to you,
bumper! two square thickish plates, mark the original bolt holes onto some card, tranfer em to the plates, measure up from each one 2" centers and drill em all out to suit the bolts your useing, offer the plates up to see where you need to grind bits off (corner of each plate i think) so it sits flush on the chassi, bolt it up and bolt the bumper to the new plates,
And roberts ya farthers brother Phew!!

I was thinking about a 2" body lift but now I think it will be too much for me, with my AS & arthritis in most joints I can't see me being able to do it, how much do you think it would cost to have someone do it for me?

                    Cheers

If only you lived nearer, I would do it for a cooked breakfast and a few mugs of tea.

Perhaps a tech weekend is required as they are useful as you can learn loads of stuff and you will get help from some really helpful members,The one we did earlier this year taught me quite a bit and i was able to help do two body lifts on captain choas and pirate storm,Plus you get to meet some other forum members

Thanks Bushwhacker, If I was nearer I'd take you up on that offer, my surf has a 2" rear suspension lift so I was going to get the front done then give the body a 2" lift, I might just settle for getting the front done for now, with Christmas fast approaching I don't want to go spending too much on things that can wait until the new year.

Richard did offer to help me with the front plus he has some wheels that I might be interested in, maybe when he has time I'll book a weekend down in cornwall in a B&B.

I thought getting rid of the old Land Rovers & buying a newer type of vehicle would stop me messing about with them, I just can't leave them alone.

Thanks again, I appreciate the offer.

                          Cheers
