my speedo won't work!!!!!

hello everyone, i have just bought a surf 2.5tdi Must say it is alot of fun, i live in the country so when the mood takes me....... field..... I have two problems.. the first is where can i go to to get mud on the roof without running the risk of being shot at? The second and most important is... in the past someone has put a mph speedo in and a little box next to the pick up on the gear box. any ideas to why the speedo and odometer do not work?
