  • The BIG switch on!

Turn the tap on the veg filter tonight after getting some suitable hose today. Ultimately, I'll settle in the containers, coarse filter into the tank, settle, and then turn on the flow. Tonight, I just threw some fairly clean settled stuff in to test for leaks.

    The 'dirty veg' tank.

The system, and the lower storage tank.

Around 60-80 litres a month. Easily enough for 50/50 at my current mileage. Brings my fuel cost down to 60p/l, or equivalent mpg to 45-50mpg

Need to fit jubilees to the filter fittings. There's some slight weeping of oil from the hose fittings, but apart from that, a few hours filtering seems to have resulted in alots of nice clear oil. Happy? Oh yes!

Cheers! They were from eBay. A seller called 'green team norfolk'.

If you search for 10" filters, you'll find them. Around a tenner each, plus a couple of quid for the fittings. Filters are a couple of quid each.

Now thats a cracking idea, ive been thinking about somethimg like this to use in my Range Rover (sorry), dumb question do you mix 50/50 in the petrol can or just pour it in after youve dieseled up ?
Do you pre filter the oil before your fine filters ?

That is such a simple set up, what time scale are you looking at from the top tank being full,to being filtered to the bottom, ball park figure will do. Also is that it, no more filtering, just stright in the tank.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Well impressed, nice clean "simple" set up, and the filter houseings are very reasonably priced, if i had a regular supply of oil i'd be doing that

25 litres took about 30 minutes to come through. It's filtered to 10 microns, and our resident poochemist tells me 10 microns is plenty. However, if you wanted, there's always the option of adding another canister for a finer filter. I used two so the waste would be distributed a bit more evenly rather than just in one filter.

I didn't pre-filter the oil first as the stuff I have has been settling for a month or so, so just poured carefully. From now on though, I will probably pour the oil through an old piece of cloth just to take out the bits of chips etc, and to stop the oil splashing back out of the tank onto me!

I have some with a layer of about an inch of animal fats on the bottom. If anyone has a solution to pouring that into my settling tank without disturbing the sludge, I'd be interested in hearing it. My current plan is to pour off a few inches, then cut the top off the container so I can see inside and keep an eye on the sludge. Its should be fairly solid once its sat for a while shouldn't it?

To answer other questions, I just pour it straight into the tank after that. Normal driving seems to mix it sufficiently. I've been using veg for a few years now, generally around the 50/50 mix, and have never noticed any issues in doing it this way. Some people do mix in a little thinners of some description, white spirit or unleaded. I've tried but didn't notice any difference with SVO. Maybe in the colder weather I'll mix a litre or two of unleaded in the can.

I've read up on it, but there's no substitute for doing it yourself to learn is there?
