  • Clueless Newbie!!

Hi. I'm keen on purchasing a Surf in the near future, probably a '98 turbo diesel and was wondering if there are any inherent problems that I should be aware of?

Also, any advice on what to look for/avoid when purchasing would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Hi and welcome - where in the county of Berks are you???

Does it have to be a '98 - have you got one in mind? What are you going to do with it? And - it's pretty much the same stuff to look out for on any other car

Press the 4WD button and make sure that comes on - check the shocks, springs (they'll be all round on the 3rd gen) check the chassis cross members, make sure they are straighter than ours...lights, door seals, tailgate struts, check the engine, power steering and brake fluid for leaks, colour and check the ATF (red dipstick) should be a red/brown colour and clear - if it's dark or opaque then it's likely to have an issue with the transmission.....

Drive it too - listen for clonks from the suspension, knocks may be worn bushes, easy to remedy, but make a noise about it and come some money off
