Do fixed antennae give better range than mag mounted even if they're the same size then?

You get a better groundplane when fixed, the better the antenna is tuned the better it performs, I've always favoured a fixed antenna over a mag mount, mag mounts are constantly being moved but for group activities you don't need to get a signal any great distance so they're fine, you'd probably find PMRs are better for group outings, no installation & very cheap.
