Motorists who leave their engines idling unnecessarily face an on-the-spot fine under plans being considered by councillors.

i need to leave my engine running as it is a turbo engine and switching off before letting it cool down naturally would cause excessive wear.

also if its warm out, i need the air con on.

Doesn't look like this has been thought through. You'll pull up at a level crossing and BAM a warden's jumped out the hedge and given you a fine. There would need to be a timer showing how long the barriers will be down. And for how far back down the queue of cars waiting would this rule apply? If there are long tailbacks formed then people may not be aware there's a railway crossing and so wait with their engine on, assuming traffic has sloweddown for another reason.
There's a lifting bridge just round the corner from where I work, lifts every two hours and causes queues for quite a distance back. Wonder how long a similar scheme would be introduced here. The money raised may pay for the 2nd bridge crossing which has been planned since the mid 1930s.

I've had a few cars, I wouldn't switch off for fear they'd never restart. Could always ask the warden for a bump start lol

i got pulled over in my track car years ago, and was TOLD to turn off the engine. i did explain that the starter motor was too hot and it would not restart without a push, and that he had to give me a push once we were finished..

but then half way through the questioning, they got a call on their policemans radio and left me stranded at 2am in the middle of f-ing no where.

I was thinking along the same lines, there are plenty of old classic cars such as the moggy in the photo that may not start once hot.
