Battery meter

Hiya,
Is it true that if the battery meter is showing a good reading, it means that the alternator is ok or does it just measure the battery voltage. I am having starting problems and am not sure if its the alternator or the battery.
All suggestions will be appreciated.

Check the battery voltage with a meter whilst the engine is running. Anything between around 13.5V to 14.5V means the alternator is fine. Anything above or below is most likely a shagged alternator. If that reading is fine, check the battery voltage with the engine not running. Reading should be around 12.8V. If below 12V or so, battery is either in good need of a charge or shagged.

Thanks for the idea, but that one is LED + it needs external power to run it and also it needs a hole to mount it (Not the end of the world that point) I have checked ebay a few times and there is never just the thing I need.

That's a possible, it would need mounting in a box maybe to protect the workings
