    Este,

Seriously, get a second opinion. Nationwide are aptly named as in "wide boys". I've heard quite a few bad reports about both their work and their diagnostic abilities. They're mainly out to get a much as they can out of customers. The local branch gave my wife a "bad news" diagnosis on her old Polo. When I checked it out I could see that they were talking BS and got another garage to look at and fix a much less costly problem.

I will def get someone else to take a look at her too. The only thing is that they did tell me it is not something they can fix hence having to take it to a specialist. That is why I didn't think they were just trying to get money out of me...

it's complete and utter BS, i drove home from cornwall with a toothless front diff. 200 miles at 80 mph and i got home with no probs. it's a fairly easy fix. a knackered diff will throw the steering out but not as bad as they have said. and you can drive it without any probs. as said in other post get a 2nd hand one from somewhere. and ask on here if there is someone on here local to you who can help you fix it.

as others have said get another opinion your save yourself a small fortune

              Stupid garage.

Diff flanges have quite a wobble even when new, I've never had to change one in 3 years of full time working on surfs.

If you really worried, buy some Manual hubs, this will stop the driveshafts moving completely, so you will never add wear to them, unless you lock the hubs and go offroad now and then. Just replace the whole shaft with a good used one.

If its leaking oil, then replace it, if it holds oil in, then its never worn enough to be a problem.

If it does need replacing its only a bush.

If it the drive shaft CV's they can seize and jam the steering, but only in exceptional circumstances, manual hubs will make this safe as well, more like ly they'll just break and fall out.

Or its the bushes in the hub, other common thing that is no biggy to sort out.

              There is nothing else there.

IF it is the diff, as has been said, a complete used front diff shouldn't set you back more than £100, and is pretty easy to swop.

As others have stated, if you can get your hands on a 'good' second hand diff then thats good. I did this but unfortunatly this diff went on me and I went and purchased a new one for the 3.0l from Toyota - just shy of £1000 for the diff alone
