OK, so took my Surf to Nationwide... Got a call from them this morning saying that it is not good news. Apparently there is a problem with the front drive shaft and differential. As far as I understood it, there is too much movement in the drive shaft which is moving the differential which in turn is causing the "clunking" sound. I was advised to take the car to a gearbox specialist (not too sure why???) and was told that I am probably looking at anything from £600 -£1000!!!! Am taking her to Sargeant Hall in Eastbourne next week but if anyone knows of anywhere closer please give me a shout as Sg. Hall said that they will take a look and will then have to send the car to Gatwick. Am also not allowed to drive it at all as there is a possibility of losing steering to the front which will cause the car to be a write off

Sounds like complete BS to me! You can buy a 2nd hand diff for £100 or so, and a driveshaft aint gonna break the bank either!
Whats this about the driveshaft moving the diff???
You need to find a member of this place reasonably local and ask them to look it over. It wont cost anything like £1000 to put right, they are pulling your plonker (obviously not literally!) cos you're a woman.
Oh, and the drivetrain has absolutely NOTHING to do with the steering!
Ask them for a report on the problems and post it up here.Cutting steps in the roof of the world

Hi mate, this happened to me a few months ago. You'll find its the crown wheel in the diff, bad news i know. Second hand diff 100 to 150quid but it must match up with the rear diff. There should be a number on the diff, failing that, on the vin plate. Good look!

Yeah - what he said, have a word with supersurf, he may have some parts - not sure if Stormbobforcepants has any 3rd gen breakers - if they can't help. give Dewsbury Auto Salvage a call, they may have some bits....Too old to care, young enough to remember
