  • Exhaust

I have just got back home & noticed that my back box has
broken. The pipe at the back of the box has rusted away.
Should i replace the back box?
I was thinking of running a pipe from the middle box straight out the back with out a back box. What do you all think? What would it cost for a back box?
    Thanks for any help.

you don't actually need the small back box over here so if you can make up a tailpipe then do that

Thats what I did, one silencer in the middle, pipe all the way to the back of the truck, sounds much better too!

the small back box in the tailpipe is there for a reason,
its all to do with back pressure,
if its an auto it will have one,
i its a manual it wont,

            I don't run 1 (2).

Doesn't make any difference what-so-ever. It's a resonator box to mellow the sound output. I used to have the rear box, removed it when I fabbed up a side exit exhaust, and noticed better throttle response.

You don't need back pressure on a turbo motor.

The turbo does an efficient job of noise reduction too.

when i bought a new back box from roughtrax several years ago they asked me if it was a manual or an auto ?
                    mine was an auto,
they told me that the back boxes were different due to back pressure ?
that is why they sell ones with the back box for an auto,
and ones without back box for the manual,
                    i have just contacted roughtrax
they confirmed that this is correct it is designed by toyota for back pressure on the auto models only,

                    roughtrax 01179869065,

There may be something in this for a non turbo, but back pressure isn't going to do anything for a turbo motor, a performance gain will come from a larger bore free flowing exhaust.

                        Thats odd.

Its a turbo. There's a big fan in the way of gas flow. How would a wee backbox affect things in this case? I can kind of see it having an effect on a normally aspirated car, but a turbo? And why auto but not manual?

<edit> Just seen Dodge's post. Spooky...

Perhaps the backbox is required so dealers can sell two types of exhaust?

I dont have a backbox. Made not one iota of difference, to the sound, or to the throttle response.

so how come my third gen has not got one. Thought 2nd & 3rd gens were vertually the same engine.
If its not broke don't fix it.

I need a new exhaust too, but after watching the vid, think i'd much rather have a V8!!!!
