  • Bank Holiday Weekend

Well my Mrs is off on another wobbly headed doll caper this weekend and is taking her car drag racing.

My mate has suggested a bit of mud bashing.

Looking for pay and play days around the Midlands.

    He mentioned Ticksover Quarry.

    Any other suggestions?

Or anyone planning a run this weekend.

    Cheers.

      Yup.

She races a classic VW Beetle that she has completey restored and she races it at Santa Pod and Avon Park Race Way.

Google Crazy Canuck Racing and you will see the car.

My mate races the VW Campervan.

As it happens, yes 1969, 1972, 1975. Dragsters used to have the engines in front of the driver in them days and you stood on a grassy baking to watch the racing. I had a paddock pass and everyfing and used to hang around Dick's place for freebies. (It was a sticker stall.)

Dennis Priddle, Don Garlitts (sp) and Gene (snowman) Snow were the big-guns of the decade.

the grassy bank is there, i went there back in april/may this year to see the qualifying of the top fueled dragsters.
i had never been before, and i had my hands in my pockets as it was a bit chilly. when they took off from the line, i couldnt get my hands in my ears quick enough. i must have looked like a right div - they are so loud the sound hurts your chest.
was a great day, until i fell asleep on the grassy bank, and got sunburn on my face quite bad - even though it was cold and cloudy all day

Quite some time ago, Autograss racing was cancelled at York and a few class 8 & 10 racers, went to York drag strip for a RWUB meet. And took the track record for the days meeting, wish I'd been there.

To be honest it really isn't my bag much. I go as pit crew chief. I prep the cars pre and post runs. I have driven her beetle a couple of times and might take it for a run down the track at an open event. Drag racing is fun if the weather is great. If it rains it becomes like the motorsport equivalent of cricket and you tend to have to hang around for the rain to stop and the track to be dried and glued.

She is currently running a race tuned air cooled VW engine it's called a mouse engine in that it is under 2 litre. It is set up with a race cam and twin 36 dell carbs out of an Alfa. It is her first year out and depending how she gets on there might be plans to fit a 2.3 litre and nitrous it.

Her personal best is on the strip is about 17 seconds. Ideally she will be putting down mid 16 seconds. The issue is with a mouse engine is that you run it without any cooling to give you more BHP but as an air cooled engine generally grenades after half a mile with no cooling it is a bit risky.

If she puts down times under 15 seconds you need to fit a full role cage and harness. Also you tend to destroy gear boxes routinely.

The guy in the bus is on his third engine in two years as he has taken his strip time from 21 seconds into the low 17s. Not bad for a loaf of bread shaped race car really.

                            Some still do mate.

                            They call them sling shots.

                            These are probably my favourite.

They have a strong race club and they will be at Avon Park this weekend racing. Santa Pod has changed a lot over the last couple of years as you can see from the web cam grab of the track. If you want a walk down memory lane I would take yourself to Avon Park Raceway as that place is the same now as it was back in the drag racing days when you were at The Pod.

Its called Pod Face. Everyoen gets it. It is notorious I have been up there in November and come home with Pod Face.

Apparently the only way to prevent it is keep your head in the engine bay all weekend or cover your face with waxoil.
