                Stunning up close aint they - we have a brook nearby and loads come into our back garden, prob is the cat keeps catching an killin' them

                  Lovely ain't they. First time I've ever seen one so close up. Never knew they were so ornately marked. The wings are beautiful too. Was a bit off the mark with the measurement though. Just checked, and it was approx 2-1/2" to 3" inches long. Obviously, the saying about us blokes and interpretation of inches is true. Could've sworn it was bigger than that.

                    i cought one when i was a kid once. it was huge!
                    the body was about as big as my finger. i used to be fascniated by them (it is a dragonfly right?)

                    i didnt hurt it, just looked at it a bit

                    i remember when i was in my nans in leeds and i was playing at the back of her garden, i looked up, and there was a whole swarm of about 20 just hovering there all looking at me for about 2 or 3 seconds.
                    n then they all flew off. i love all the different colours you get.

                      Yup. Been having a peek at the BDS site, and it looks like it may have been the female of this type:

                      That seems to be the closest match on colouring.
