What's so good about the guts that make them so dam expesive. Will I notice improvement ove the ipod standard ones?

Bose triport 3's. Got them cheap (something like 33% off) in the states on veterans day by pretending I was in the army

Me too, but the family's not so keen. I've got a pair of Mission 790's and a pair of Acoustic Energy AE2's (look em up) that I'm refurbishing.

Part of it's due to the name, part due to the quality of manufacture and part due to the design. They will sound better than a £5 pair of earphones. Once you get beyond a certain level though, only the keenest of ears will notice any real difference between most decent brands and types. As with anything, a lot of the desirability is due to pure marketing practices. It's akin to the B&O scenario.
