  • Greenlaning in Cambridgeshire/Essex/Suffolk

Hi people - new to the Forum as i'm just about to pick up my new surf. It's a 2.4TD 1991

I've bought it for 2 reasons only, caravanning and greenlaning. The caravanning side of things i'm pretty much set with but i'm at a loss as far as offroading goes. I saw Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear driving his fox across the fields saying how legal it was.

Can anybody help me to find these 'greenlanes'? Are they signposted? I knwo i need to get an OS map, i think i remember how to read them from my Cadet days but what am i looking for on the map? A particular colour line?

    Any advice is most welcome.

    Thanks

    Richard

    im a newbie surfer too..hiya

seems you have to part with money to find the elusive/legal lanes..from what little knowledge ive managed to research, look on your OS map, for the green dashed line (one with crosses = byways, one with alternate/half crosses = roads used as public footpath). Once you've found them, call your local rights of way office and see if you can actually use them legally...then do a reccy to see if there actually passable.

or pay your subs and join your local club/glasses

Cheers mate, i've had a look on the GLASS website and yes i think it might be worth parting with the £33 they're asking for. £33 isn't bad for a year of fun days out??

I'm in the process of buying a winch as i've been told it's advisable as the AA don't like coming to tow you out of a muddy ditch - messes their paint work up lol.

Have a look on CRAG site (www.crag-uk.org) as they don't charge to access Wayfinder.

Also try the offroad section of this site, as there are a few pointers in there.

If you know how the lanes are marked on a map - in terms of what to look for in the key, then look on streetmap.co.uk - or alternatively buy Memory Map software for your PC

You may be lucky enough to find a local member of two that could show you around....

        Have fun!

Oh - and welcome to the forum - and as your's is a 2.4, check the coolant, check the head, thermostat and rad cap before you go dragging your caravan around behind you!

Your money may be better spent on a body and sus lift to start with, maybe bigger tyres, than going straight to a winch - and get some recovery straps too - have a look on paddock spares website for the ProComp straps....winches are fine, so long as you know how to use them and have the rest of the kit to recover yourself as well as others....

          whoa !!!!!

a better investment would be some decent all terrain tyres(which if you have already , i will shut my mouth)

but for greenlaning,a winch isnt generally required. a standard surf on decent rubber will take you most places

          but NEVER go offroading alone
          Non intercooled nothing.

so mr rawtradingco, dont get a winch becayse...err...me and mr mud dont need them !!

seriously, i have a winch fitted ,but did lots of other things before hand.again the best thing is decent tyres

and mr mud, i do belive that they now have templates for the mounting of the tray/bumper.its a big triangle plate arrangement that bolts directly to the front of the chassis rails

                    Sweeeeeeeet!!!!

My mount was at the benders for a while before Vatchensurfsteinburg gave up on them to make one from scratch.....don't want a full bumper, cos of my mighty fine, dual tubular chrome effort....

And yeah, Mr rawtradingcomany.com - what he said!

                      Hi mate,

I'm just up the road from you in Yeldham, and have a few green lanes that I use locally, so more than happy for you to come along when we go. My Surf is dead at the moment, head gone but I've acquired a discovery off a farmer I know, so I'm still playing. Give me a pm with your email and I'll let you know when we next go, you never know, you might be able to gloat at pulling a Land Rover out hehe.

                      Cheers,

                      Bu5h.
                      If you play with fire.....

OK - I've been awarded it for this - so, I think after 115 sucessful posts (and still no name change I see) I think the Professor's namesake needs an IOTW award for asking a non subscribed member to send him a PM.......

As for the other chaps that were replying, i've got an Estima at the minute so i'm all to aware of the head problems - but when you say check the rad cap, am i checking the seal? I'm planing on having a full service done on it before i do any great distance so i'm hoping that Bob will identify any faults
