Looking at the 'crash' site, it looks like one of those long straight roads through the desert with sand at the edges that you see them hooning about on, on youtube.

If it glanced off something at speed and left that type of road then, that wreckage could quite easily be achieved when you consider how far it might have scudded over uneven terrain.
