  • Noob to Hilux, thinking of buying. Any advice much appreciated

    Hi

After years of ruining perfectly good cars by using them to transport garden/building equipment and trips to the tip today I had a brainwave. Why not buy a reasonably proced second hand car that is built for that sort of abuse.....5 minutes later I was a newly registered user on this forum

So, I am thinking of spending about £2k on a Surf....er, thats all I know. What variants are there, and which are the good ones and which are the lame ducks to avoid.

Next noob question. Can you buy Surfs that have a double cab (forgive me if that is the wrong terminology) with a detachable body at the rear to give you an open flat bed? We have two young kids so whilst the car would be used mainly as a working run around/trip to the builders type of vehicle it would be nice if all 4 of us could fit in. And my little boy would love it!

Or is it a case of flat bed or enclosed boot?

    Such a noob question...

    Avoid them at all costs!

they are soo good that you just become addicted to them!! Go to a mitsubishi forum quick before you fall in love

Anyway, Mate. They are bl**dy awesome trucks. Perfect for pretty much everything.

Comfortable for long trips. not too bad on fuel. Feel awesome driving them. drop the rear seats down an you could move house in like two trips with the amount of space you get. An Just by being here you can find decent an cheap ways to add lift's an larger tyres to truly enjoy your surf.

Anyway, The Surf which is better equiped then a pickup is a solid body. You can get pickups but its not as 'lush' as a surf!

Just get one, Make sure its black an then love it!

      Hi mate
All Surfs are as you say enclosed boot and all are twin cab as that they're all five seaters, some have been made with two doors, but still 5 seats. The seats at the rear can be folded down however.
The main variants are 2.4 and 3.0 litre manual and auto. I'd pick a 3 litre if you plan any motorwat driving, otherwise a 2.4 is fine. Manual or auto is a personal preference. Avoid maroon ones and black one the best looking.

Cheers for th quick replies guys, much appreciated.

I was wondering what people use them for - is the fact that the boot is enclosed an issue? Or is it big enough to chuck gardening and building materials/equipment in?

I like the look of them but perhaps I should go for the pickup truck version?

With the seats down I had a fridge in the boot which was 185cm tall... total pain in the friggin a$$ an had to drive with my knees up by my ears but still...

A single cab is best for carrying loads. A double cab is kind of limited. You couldn't have fitted the fridge in it. The surf is a neat 'midway' kinda thing.

You can fit loads in bigger then a double cab but smaller then a single cab.... but only just

You can take the roof off the back bit on a first gen.

Ah...that could be worth a look. Having said that what is the difference between a 1/2/3rd gen?
