Silverstone loses British GP to Donington

By Jonathan NobleFriday, July 4th 2008, 10:39 GMT

The British Grand Prix will leave Silverstone and move to Donington Park from 2010, the FIA announced on Friday.
After months of speculation about whether or not Silverstone would retain the race, Donington Park has moved to complete a deal to secure the future of the event.
FIA President Max Mosley said: "After many years of patient but fruitless negotiation with the BRDC, we are delighted that Bernie has nevertheless been able to ensure that the British Grand Prix will keep its place on the Formula One World Championship calendar.
"We understand that the development programme planned for Donington will achieve the very high standards we and FOM expect from a modern F1 circuit. Finally, British Formula One fans will get the Grand Prix venue they deserve."
Bernie Ecclestone, FOM President, added: "Finally the uncertainty is over. A contract has been signed with Donington Park and the future of the British Grand Prix is now secure.
"We wanted a world class venue for Formula One in Britain, something that the teams and British F1 fans could be proud of. The major development plans for Donington will give us exactly that. A venue that will put British motor sport back on the map.
"I am sorry that we could not have helped Silverstone to raise the money to carry out the circuit improvements and run Formula One. I believe that the government should have supported them which would have cost probably less than .002% of the government's commitment for the Olympic Games."
' You've arrived on a rather special night. It's one of the master's affairs.'

        Donington bosses promise £100m revamp

By Jonathan NobleFriday, July 4th 2008, 11:03 GMT

Donington Park's owners have vowed to fund a five-year £100 million investment programme into the circuit as part of its new 10-year deal to host the British Grand Prix.
The FIA made a shock announcement on Friday that the British GP would be leaving Silverstone after next year's race, following the track's failure to reach agreement with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone on a new deal.
And in a statement issued by Donington Park on Friday, the circuit said funding for the massive redevelopment would be led by a private investor who is also a large shareholder in the company.
Donington Park's owners and joint CEOs, Simon Gillett and Lee Gill said: "We are naturally delighted and extremely proud to have acquired the rights to bring Formula One back to Donington Park from 2010.
"At the beginning of last year when we acquired the circuit and its substantial lands, we made clear our commitment towards realising the full potential of the Park by making the necessary investments in current and future events that will see Donington revitalised, ensuring its leading position as one of the most iconic racing circuits in the world.
"To that end, we have now entered a new and exciting chapter in the development of the Park and one that will bring significant investment and regional development while securing the future of one of the most important and significant sporting events in Britain."
Donington Ventures Leisure Limited say they have already worked closely with local and national authorities ahead of the planning requirements needed for the work on the track.
It has promised to reveal details of its plans at a future date, when negotiations with 'other important third parties' have been concluded.
There are some suggestions that Ecclestone himself could become a promoter of the event.

The Silverstone lot have been twiddling their thumbs for how many years now though over getting just the basic facilities sorted? They were begging for it to happen. At least we're keeping an English GP.

everywhere else on the planet its government sponsored...

This country, however, has better things to spend it on...

Typical... Just finished the Jackie Stewart autobiography... and he's been banging on about geting better funding for the place specifically to keep the F1 GP... but no one listens... Old Bernie smarty pants, is thinking about one thing... his own pockets... so who can blame him... it'll go to the highest bidder...

Perhaps at Donnington you will get treated like people who have paid to come in rather than an inconvenience that gets in the way of the IMPORTANT people in the hospitality areas.
                    Do I sound bitter?
Silverstone has always been a rubbish track to watch motor sport as it is built on the brow of a hill.
                    Time is an illusion.
                    Lunchtime doubly so.

Bit of imagination an your at the GP!

On a more serious note the 5 year revamp plan sounds great as far as the motorsport is concerned but donnington has been the home of 'monsters of rock' an download etc for yeeeears!!! I wonder if the revamp is going to cause issues for it
