  • No Diesel- Veg Oil Okay?

Can't get diesel for love nor money round here (tried 4 garages on Sunday) Asda had some but there was a 1/4 mile queue so I never bothered.

Inside Asda the Veg Oil was a tempting 99p/litre - can I just tip this straight into my tank or do I need to consider any thing else?

If you've never used it before, be ready for a fuel filter change. If you have some diesel still, thats the time to do it as you wont be running on straight veg.

Put 15l veg into about 20l diesel from my emergency jerrycan (+ some white spirit to thin it) done about 50km so far okay......

I was wanting to ask about 'thinners'.

So, people use white spirit, unleaded and acetone amongst others. What sort of mix has been found to be OK?

I'm quite loathe to put acetone in my veg as it's a VERY powerful degreaser, though white spirit or unleaded aren't quite so agressive.

Reading around, white spirit seems to be a common additive- as it's clean, relatively cheap and burns well. Acetone's harder to get hold of and might damage your fuel pump seals? Thinning might not even be necessary in summer temps- don't know about the cooler months though?

I put approx 1l of white spirits to approx 15l of veg.I put the white spirit in the veg first and give it a good shaking up before pouring in the tank just so its well mixed.I use the W/S mainly in the cooler months but i do still add some during the summer aswell just to thin it a bit

Just in pedant mode for one moment, it is obviously a poor choice if the purpose of using veg oil is for its ecological benefits, (which it isn't in your specific case), as I do believe that both white spirits and turps substitute are distillates from the petro-chem process.

Personally, I use veg for pocketological benefits mainly.

I see what you mean- but I just wanted to be able to get to work on Monday! Still no diesel at the village Shell garage. More is available over here in Rugby- might carry on with the veg experiment though.

i only use white spirit in winter months but only like 250ml to about 15L
just to take the edge of the oil, but no need now as its warmer.
at the min i use 18L-diesel to 30L-veg
the 250ml of W/S did take the bad idle away in the winter and
i only use that much to keep the saving up!

stormforce what ratio diesel you use with veg?,if any.

it all depends at the time.Sometimes i fill the tank with veg and w/spirit but if i put diesel in then its normally £10 to £15 of diesel and then fill with veg with no w/spirit
