  • ???Swaping a 2.4 for 3.0???

Hi all!! I will try to make this as short as possible...Finally found a garage near me that knows a fair bit about surfs!!! Surfs galore parked out front in various states of repair/break...too bad I am moving next month!! Had the guy look at ours as we are still having power probs going up hill. He basically said the engine is not a standard 2.4 turbo diesel as it should be but a combination of a Hilux pick up truck and a 2.4 and is stuck in get you home mode???( Plus we need four new tyres) Anyway the misses and I were prepared to pour another £500 into her however he has a black 94 SSRX 3.0 limited (w/o all accessories) he will swap us for £700. Drove it today and it seems to run better than ours but there seems to be a bit of an oil leak..possibly from rocker cover...he said he would change all belts etc. Not too sure if this is a good deal or not but we are moving abroad so need a truck that will definitely be dependable as I am not sure how much longer the "make shift" engine in ours will last. Here is the thing..this one has a better engine..or seems too..but no extras. The misses wants to keep the bull bar because it's one of the old style bars that are hard to find but the bloke basically wants ours to scrap for all the shiny bits so won't trade without. All the shiny bits inc bonnet and sun roof guards, wind deflectors, bull bars, spots side runners with 2 1/2" steel tubing, stereo with disc changer..etc... is it worth a swap for a basically bare truck with a better engine or would we be better off trying to get the engine put right? Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions...please???

What does he want cash price for the 3.0? Is there any way you can front the money for the 3.0 and break the 2.4 yourselves?

and where exactly does the oil appear to be leaking from?

He is asking £1500 but will take ours plus £700 for the 3.0 ... would break the 2.4 ourselves but time is getting short & paying out the behind for most of the move.....getting refunded but its kinda tight at the mo.... (we are getting packed up on the 23rd of june to move to Italy) and the oil seems to be from the rocker cover but underneath it looks like its around the sump & dripped towards the auto box (not too good on specifics yet but on the rectangular box behind the sump with all the bolts around the edges... def engine oil) looks like he put a new exhaust on it tho. after taking it for a drive there was a couple of drips on the ground after 5 min or so..... have taken some pics on the phone but they arent the best & shall post them if i can find the cable!!

A leaking steering pump can look like a leaky engine when it washes all the crud down off of engine, but you did seem to think it was engine oil though.

I would say them allowing you £800 on your faulty 2.4 is a good deal. Getting a 3.0 litre for 1.5k is also good. The oil leak sounds like rear crank seal which is why it is not yet fixed. (gearbox out job). A pain but not a major fault.

cheers kerrsurf & thanks for the input gents, the photo bucket link is

                http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/k...annah05_photo/

the guy is replacing the rear bumper (well have to fit it but he is giving us a non rusted one), and the pic of mine is up there too (2.4 grey).
ok.... got the phone working and the pics are on the album too (not very clear tho im afraid......).
Any ideas how much it would be to sort out the rear crank seal leak if it was that?

Thanks again in advance for all your help

Ps presumed it was engine oil because of the viscosity & black colour..... but saying that the missus though the steering was a bit wobbly but i put that down to a much needed belt change.

Looks tidy enough but at that price i'm wondering whats up with it, you'll get plenty of help on here but i'd be weary of a dealer offering a "good deal"
And wot's "get u home mode" post a pic of your 2.4 engine and lets have a butchers, sounds to me like your 2.4 is in better condt than the 3.0,

                    I am agreeing with Popeye....
I am always a little weary of dealers like that....
I think he know's that ur surf is prob a real easy fix....and that the oil prob might be a little more than he is letting on...I mean he is in it for the money not to give friendly advice or keep u surfing like the peple on here....

I think it will be worth trying to get a few lads from the forum who are near u to have a look at yours and a brain storm... and then go from there....
U might be better off getting urs back into tiptop rather then another surf that might turn out to be a bigger money pit than u bargained for......
One day at the time I guess..

I know about the too good to be true feeling...I have had a bit of a learning curve over the last year or so..(only able to do anything now due to all the help from this forum) when we got the 2.4 we had no idea about engines & the guy that we got if from did a runner afterwards.. the head went, exhaust then coolant leak & harmonizer pulley........ saying that she has been good with a fair few trips up to western isles and a lot of running about down south so i would spend some cash on her but it would mean new tyres all around & the exhaust needs looking at again plus sorting out the engine (if possible).
With regard to the engine it looks like someone before us has put a 2l pickup engine in her and rigged the ecu some how, as there isnt a place in the block for the crank sensor (this is rigged to the power steering drive wheel) so the engine isnt getting the right timing(hence faults 12&13)... sooo not getting the power that should be there.. i.e really slow takeoff, not too bad on the flat but just dies going up steep hills (20-30Kph in some cases) and just drinking fuel.
Will get out in a few & take some pics......

                      Thanks again for everyones input

Just an idea tho.... does anyone have an idea how much it would be to replace the seals on the 3.0 engine if that was the case? Just asking as i have to give the guy an answer tomorrow morning.

ok pics of engine & truck are on

                      http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/k...annah05_photo/

The ones of the sensor are from top view and the one of the steering wheel shaft shows a white wire that is hanging free....is that supposed to be connected someplace?

Only point i'd question is the earth tag in the pic, this aint a good grounding point, as for the sensors i dont have a clue, it certainly looks like the wireing has been bodged tho, chock connectors!! ok inside the cab but untaped and where the dirt/ mosture can get at em
i guess the 3lt could be just the rocker cover gasket, you need it running and have a good inspection, if you px it take the front bars off, he'll make £150 -200 on them alone, dificult desision mate,
