Clutch bands?

Sorry about posting here. Cant post in 'tech' at the mo.

On hills when in 'D', the truck rolls back if I take my foot off the gas. Same happens when reversing up hills.

Any thoughts? I heard clutch bands mentioned this weekend.

Well mines been like it since at least 2003 when it was imported, and it hasn't got any worse, so I'll just ignore this thread and hope with ignorance.

Bands does sound awfully technical and convincing though. I'd definitely agree with that diagnosis.

I reckon as I'm fitting an auxilliary cooler shortly, i'll drain the ATF, clean the filter and put fresh ATF in. Could just be a bit frazzled as its been used a bit hard lately (and I have had the ATF overtemp light on last weekend for about 5 mins).

Personally, it's something I wouldn't worry about. As you say, just replace the fluid as a precautionary measure. At the end of the day, doing the auto version of slipping the clutch ain't a good idea on hills anyhow, so you're foot ought to be planted on the brake. Mine does it on larger inclines, but is okay on smaller ones. I've ne'er g'in it a second thought, to be honest.

I dont really remember the inclines it was happening on to be honest as I was concentrating on not plunging off the edge of cliffs and things

You could be right, could just be burnt ATF combined with pretty steep hills, and I cant say I noticed it on the road on the way home.

i would stick with the prognosis of dirty or burnt atf.try changing the fluid first as this is the easiest and least expensive.also less technical.it was propably a case of the fluid getting to hot,it was quite sunny and warm over the wkend.add that to a very hot engine and coolant temp after climbing big hills.oh and whilst your there it migh be a good idea to remove the pan and clean out the filter.

While we're at it, I'm assuming there is a breather on the autobox somewhere? Worth plumbing it in to the raised diff breather hose?
