Pretty much anywhere from Portsmouth to Felixstowe is within two hours of J18, so you've got lots to choose from.

I doubt you'll find much available at short notice. Since caravaning has got more popular in the UK you have to books pitches in December or January to even stand a chance of getting somewhere decent for Easter, May Day or Spring Bank Holiday.

A site we use in Cornwall has to be booked at least two years in advance to even stand a chance of getting the main holiday week(s) you want and even then it can be difficult, but as it's adults only it is very popular with us older, kid unfriendly, caravanners.

have i read somewhere else you're into fishing? there's a couple down this way with their own lakes. Chequertree fishery near bethersden (15 minutes from ashford), is a nice little place and the waters dead easy with allsorts carp to 25lb, but also teeming with sturgeon that eat anything and everything, OK not really what you'd choose to go after, but great fun and give a good fight. There's also a trout lake there. Not much else there though, there's a pub at the end of the road, but it's been converted to a thai place, not sure if there's still a public bar there aswell, it used to be the royal standard but is now royal spice.

there's also one with a good reputation down deal/sandwich way with it's own lakes, never been there though, thought about it a couple of years ago when i was fishing regularly.
