Thinking of getting a car that's cheaper to run than the surf!

As the title really, ( put a thread up a while ago, but not done much about it) The increasing cost of fuel means that I'm spending over £100 a week just to get to work.

Nowthen, I've been looking at the little renault clio's as the Ex missus has had hers since 2001 and put over 100,000 miles on it, and the only bits it's ahd was a set of new front discs about 5000 miles ago ( apart from the usual service items)

The clio's vary in price, but I'm looking at the cheap end of the market, ie £500 ish.

They do 40-50mpg which is what I'm after, nothing else matters.

If I can get 50 mpg, I cut my fuel bill in half ( a saving of £200 per month), that means the car will pay for itself in two/three months, and then I'm saving money ( towards the Pyrenees trip, and other surf related things) as the cost of fuel is depriving me of everything else in life that's worth having.

You can get a brand new scooter for about £500 and get about 80 to the gallon, cheaper tax and insurance dosn't take up to much room

Aye, but I'd have to buy all the bike gear, and then what with the weather in this country, I'd be getting soaking wet 200 days a year, and then having to change when I got to the office,and of course the increased likelyhood of a spell in hospital, so I reckon a car is a better choice for me.

Sounds entirely sensible to me. If you're after pure MPG though, there#s only one choice....

I'd be happy with that, if I could get it for under £550, I like the little froggy diesels, they're cheap to run and maintain.

Yes the AX is a pretty reliable car Allthough boring and basic , parts a bit pricey when you do have prob though

Yes the AX is a pretty reliable car Allthough boring and basic , parts a bit pricey when you do have prob though

If it lasted a year, then broke, I'd s c r a p it, and buy another, for that money it ain't worth fixing.

The jump from 25mpg to 40-50 mpg will save me between £1600 and £2000 a year on fuel alone, and that's not to be sniffed at, even taking into account the extra tax and insurance, I'd be saving money, and the wear and tear on the little froggy will be a lot cheaper to maintain than it will on the surf.

i will post some up tomorrow.but here is a little info on it.its done 75,000 miles from new,just had a full service including cam belt change.engine is sound,no rust but the paint work is a little shabby and there is a small dent in the bonnet and a crack in the rear bumper,its the ford purple colour.

I've just had to do the same meself mate. Only diference being i went for a newer model as i'm putting over 800miles a week on it. Picked up the 1.5Dci model and am getting a constant 55+mpg out of it, and bonus is only £35 road tax.
