Isn't it Dexron II, and 4.5ltrs? It is according to the sticky in general servicing, and also the writing on my dipstick (well, my trucks dipstick - quiet in the cheap seats!).

S'ok. I'm no expert on these fluids, so I'm always wary of mixing/substituting (like Dot3/Dot4 for brake fluid) away from the manufacturers spec. I know that a lot of fluids are 'backwards compatible', so if that's the case with Dexron, then Dexron III should be fine in place of the Dexron II.
Dunno if this is recommended, but this is what my simple mind worked out.
Put in fluid, roughly 1 litre at a time. Give it a couple minutes to settle between each litre, and check the dipstick. Around 4 litres it should be registering in the middle on the dipstick. Now, with the transfer lever (the stubby gear stick) in neutral, start the engine, and put it in gear. Run it for a minute. Re-check the dipstick, and repeat. Take it out for a test spin, drive slowly, but give it a chance to warm up properly. Re-check, etc etc.
