  • Rear bump stops

Just had a play on the building site at the back of work whilst the paddys are off elsewhere. Haven't really tried it in anger since fitting BJ spacers / cutting down front bump stops, and articulation seems a bit better on some neat little axle twisters (lots of rubble piles )

However, I noted on some bits when I was losing traction, a rear wheel was pushed up into the arch far enough for the lower spring seat to hit the bumpstop.

The bumpstop consists of 3 'donuts', can I cut the lower two off without any ill effects? Also, is it worth fitting some webbing straps to prevent over extension while I'm under there?

OK, I'll just cut them off then...

I would say yes to cutting, and can't do any harm to the straps question

I'm guessing re the straps, that I want them to go tight just before the shock tops out so as not to damage the shock.

Cut the bump stops. Fit the straps, as you say, to go tight just before the shocks bottom out or the springs fall out; whichever comes first...

I suppose if I run the strap inside of the spring, it may become unseated, but wont fall out - which is nice.

Might jack a wheel up and see how far off full shock compression it is when it hits the bumpstop. REALLY dont want to be getting so far that the shock bottoms out before the bumpstop!

Aye, that would be a good thing. Or, if the springs do come loose, you could get some cone things fabbed up to guide them back in to place.

Just cut about 2.5" off (dictated by a gap in the spring that I could get the saw through ), which should translate to 3"-4" at the wheel on axle twisters. The shock still has plenty to go before full compression.

Didn't try it out. Instead, I... gave... the ...truck...a...

Limit straps go from the bottom of the shock, to chassis, like these on Lindas truck......

How's that attached half way up the shock Tony? Looks like a hose clip. Is that just to stop it flapping about?

Its just a cable tie, otherwise it would be baggy at the bottom and hang down. You run the risk of hooking it up on rocks and branches.

I had a rear wheel dangling today, and the shock wasn't fully extended (I was able to push it down further). Why's that then?

as for the springs you could just clamp them down at the bottom like they do on landys that way the spring wont go anywhere if you do get to much flex
