  • Strange laptop happenings...

Just on this site, no other sites open, and a gambling website opened a new window. Closed it and loads and loads of windows started opening with some rather dubious sites (porn / gambling mainly). Every time I closed a window, another load opened until it took the laptop out.

I had to pop the battery out to get it to restart, but when I opened IE again, several more sites opened, so I didn't close them this time, just minimised.

I'm now running Adaware and its found 229 infections (!). I've just updated my AVG because it has switched itself off (Hmmm, not good) and will run that after Adaware has done its stuff.

Is this likely to have been spyware, or will I find something more sinister? Seems odd as the laptop is behind a hardware AND a software firewall...

Yes, my AVG normally updates every day. When this started happening, I noticed the little AVG icon was greyed out and when I went into it, it was off. Windows also warned that there was no virus software.

Its probably about time I rebuilt this machine as its a couple of years old and getting a bit slow.

It will not do any harm Apache, and hopefully will remove the crap that's infected your laptop.

                          McAfee Avert Stinger
Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

                          How do I use Stinger?
The Stinger for W32/Polip can be found here

                          Download v3.8.0 [1,953,799 bytes] (9/10/2007)
NOTE: The file has been renamed to circumvent anti-stinger tactics used by Sober.r

Stinger didn't find anything, nor did AVG, so I'm assuming it was rooted out by Adaware? There was 4 critical objects among 200 odd tracking cookies!

Its stopped doing it now anyway.

                              Oh, and cheers Tony!
