So whats the deal with Road Tax?

I was going to get myself a nice 95/96 3.0 surf and spend untold sums of money making it the 4x4 pimp my ride mobile (I also need a good workhorse as my knackered old estate is nearly dead) but today I have been told road is going to be £1000 on 4x4's!!??

Is this true - I was under the impression an older car would get away with lower road tax, is this no longer the case?

I would be running it on bio-diesel too or some veg oil mix would this effect road tax?

    Damn you Brown!

Sounds like you've been fed more anti-4x4 BS. Pre 2001 cars are unaffected by these tax grabs. They're covered with blanket rates - currently about £190 for a full year, and set to rise around £5 a year IIRC.

The use of veg has no effect on road tax.

The £1000 figured mentioned is a proposed 'show room' tax on gas guzzlers - no matter how many wheels are powered.

The £950 is the maximum rate of a "showroom" tax on new vehicles - not just 4x4's, but all vehicles with high CO2 emissions. I haven't seen any figures yet but as far as I can see the Surf will still attract a fixed rate tax as there are no CO2 emission figures available to allow "green" taxation.

It turns out that 9 out of 10 family sallons are also affected by the "showroom" tax, and higher road fund licience.

Good old Labour, looking after the working man as usual..............NOT

You don't seriously think they have had our interests at heart for a very long time (i.e. since they came to power) do you?

No, but I was once under the impression that the labour party was formed to fight the corner of the common man, but now, they're no better than the landed gentry they vowed to oppose.

Labour is there to benefit all those that live on benefits, immigrants and those that earn their salary from the state. The vast majority of which, are their captive voters!

If you work for a commercial company you are there to support all of the above.

The media coverage of the budget was apalling and inaccurate...headline grabbing statements from TV and most newspapers... most journalists really don't have a clue..but just keep flinging meaningless statements..

I have learned more from this forum about how road tax will effect me than any of the major news outlets....

Unfortunately, the media are, and always have been less trustworthy than the government.

I'm having a great time telling some of the whinging buggers that believe all the Governments propaganda !

Life is too important to take seriously !

There is a sting in the tail of the budget possibly for us - anyone notice 'eyebrows' said he was setting aside new funding to develop road-pricing schemes.

Wasn't there a massive petition on the government website against such an animal ?

I keep saying it, they're gonna screw us one way or another, untill the common working man just can't afford to run a car, then the whole country will be totally f*cked, coz nobody will be able to afford to go to work, and the whole tax and bennifit system will collapse, shortly follow by the country as a whole.
The polloticians won't care, coz they all got property abroad they can slink off to.
