Both provide reliable measures for diagnosing a slow connection. Whenever performing these tests please make a note of the results and the time of day the test was carried out. These may be useful for diagnosis of the problem later.
Also, you can try tweaking the maximum transmission unit (MTU) setting on the PC. The MTU is a setting on the PC which specifies the maximum packet size your PC can send / receive at a time.
The recommended MTU size is 1458 bytes. There is a tool that can be downloaded to ensure that these recommendations are adhered to:
To download the Network Optimizer go to http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/dload/ and click on the ?MTU tweak tool? button. Download and install the tool. This will configure the MTU setting to 1458 bytes.
Glad I found out about Tiscali from my fathers friend as I was about to go with them. He asked me to see if I could get him connected (seeing i'm in IT Field..yawn:yawn). Tested his connection to a Mobile phone through Hyperterminal [succesful] and then tried tiscali connection...wouldn't provide the handshake with their server so the guy contacted their Helpdesk (maybe outsourced to India I believe) and had loads of b/s from them. I talked to them and they didn't know half the stuff they claimed to know and eventually the guy cancelled his subscription
