Personal import???

Hi all

I have just joined this forum as I am looking to buy a surf to replace my Discovery....anyway I have been looking into buying one direct from Japan but am really looking for a 1995 3.0td so will need to SVA it....what sort of costs can I expect to have to pay....obviously there is the shipping fee, 17.5% vat, 10% import duty, I guess customs ???, £25 reg fee + RFL, MOT?, SVA I am happy to do whatever work I can myself to get it through SVA - although do things like speedo conversion need certification??
If it all adds up to too much I may go with a 92 - 93 model 2.4 instead!
ps what is performance like on the 3 and 2.4? (in comparison to a 3.5 V8 Disco?! possibly?)

I got rid of my Disco, best thing I ever did. To answer your question it depends how much money you have available, but if you are looking at a 95 2nd gen then my advice would be to buy one thats already in the country, £5500 - £7500 should get you one thats nice and you have the advantage of driving it first instead of looking at a photograph, hope this is of help.
