    hi lads and lasses.
just beeen to my local toyota dealer for some info about towing limits for the surf as i,ve seen that many reports that differ so much i thought i would go to toyota thinking well they built them so they might have some idea what they will pull legally, i asked the chap the question, the answer was a bit different to what i thought it would be, he said they had just received a letter off head office saying that imported surfs SHOULD NOT BE FITTED WITH TOWBARS as they might not be sturdy enough, meaning the truck not the towbar, his words, after i stopped laughing at this clown i asked to see the letter, i am getting a copy tomorrow, i,ve seen towbars on mini metro,s so does this mean metro,s are tougher than surfs i somehow doubt this very much, has anyone else heard this,
    regards johnno

It's the usual toyota cr@p, they don't like the fact that surfs get imported and try all manner of things to try to "persuade" you that they are illegal, unsafe, unroadworthy etc. That being the case, the 4-runner (which will have been built on the same production line) should not be sold as it cant have passed it's type approval.

Normally that is my reply & they normally go away in short sharp jerky movements

And a Metro has written off a Surf in an accident. It belonged to a guy who works in my mates garage. The Metro ran into the side of his surf at an angle, it ripped the rear axle away.

Yeah, every US 4Runner is rated at 1500kg, and Ozzy ones. For some reason Toyota UK dealers varies from 1500 to 2250kg for a UK 4Runner.

Curb weight of a Surf is 1950-2010kg, GVW probably pushing 2500 max.
2000kg ish of trailer and load is comfortable max for you're average Surf IMHO, anything over 1500kg and things start to get hot for Auto trucks on long hills unless you have a ATF cooler.

Any Jap fitted tow bar is unlikely to be EU approved, this probably what they ment but got it backwards.

                Gday tony,
Im not quite sure why the uk ones have several different towing spec's than our ozzy ones.

Would it have to do with it being fitted with a coil or leaf suspension's?

Or the type of brakes fitted to rear?

All our hilux's imported have drums on the rear, what about the official uk imports?
