    Name: Methane Ice Worms
Location: Gulf of Mexico, 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana
Description: In 1997, vast colonies of strange, rosy-pink worms 1-2 inches in length were found burrowing in mounds of methane-rich ice erupting from the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico.
What this means for life in the universe:

The discovery of these previously unknown life forms, living in frigid ocean depths far beyond the reach of sunlight, extend our definition of what constitutes a habitable environment. The discovery provides further evidence that life is tough in the extreme.

I didn't know that ice even erupted from the sea floor, never mind it was full of worms!

And at the opposite end of the temperature scale.........

The 'black smokers', vents that spew out very hot highly acidic water deep in the ocean. Bacteria live on the acid, and then an entire eco system lives on the bacteria including worms and crabs. Again, no influence of the sun.

A bacterium has been discovered in sealed cave systems that lives off sulphuric acid and whatever rock its living on - rock, for Christs sake!

A description and picture of snotites (that's what they are called, I kid you not) can be found at the bottom of this page....
