New Boy Need HELP

Hi there! I've just joined your site. Why? Because I want a Surf! Anyway, as I said I'm a New Boy and I need some help. I am now actively looking for a Surf but I really could do with some buying advice. What should I look for and what should I avoid? What are the tell-tale signs of problems to come? I want something reliable to get me to work (A-roads) and something to have fun with at weekends (no-roads). All help greatly appreciated!

PS I live in Fife, so if there are any Scottish Surfers out there with local knowledge.....

I'm not a scottish surfer, just a surrogate scotsman!

Firstly ignore any bad comments about burgandy surfs, they are the most reliable, fuel efficent vehicle out there (well apart from it's Hearts colours)

2.4's have a bad reputation for cracking heads, but the later ones (and a awful lot of earlier ones) have had the later 2.8 head fitted with seems to have cured the problem. Some have gone on for years without a problem. Same thing has been happening to the 3.0ltr ones, but I do not know of a updated head to these.

Automatic ones are the most popular, but don't expect zillions of MPG from a 2nd gen, at best (on a long run, downhill with a wind behind you, expect 30mpg MAX) round town 18-20 is more the norm, tow a caravan and JR ewing is suddenly your best friend!

Spares are reasonably easy to get hold off, Roughtrax or Milners tend to do loads, but some toyota dealers treat you like an outcast.

I have not had a major problem with reliability in my two surfs, mines only cost tyres & brake pads in 3 years (apart from servicing items)

this said I love my surf, its the best 4x4 i've had, plenty of space for the kids, and I don't get cramp from driving for miles.

for the off road stuff, there are many on here who have done loads, me I don't get much time for that...... YET

Whatever you get, make sure it has 3.0ltr's and is Black. You will get more respect. And there are loads of surfers north of the border.

Ya certainly come to the Ultimate in Forums on the Planet n once ya got a Toyota Truck ya can argue till ya hearts delight about best colour !! best Gen 1st ...2nd .... 3rd .... or just ya Questions... we don't bite n we may even help ya !!!
Had my Truck 6n half years, minor repairs/costs = £600 in all to date, (not typical of every body tho)

Hi guys, thanks for the help/advice. Looked at a SSR-G 3.0 auto at the weekend. Runs nicely, looks the part and has had £2K worth of work done (inc a new head). Everything sounds good but how much does it drink? Lets just bear in mind that the wife doesn't yet know that it's a 3 litre! (There will be spin!)

I've got a 3.0ltr and am only averaging 20mpg, possibly due to my trips being mainly local and I have a heavy right boot. On any bit of a run over 50mph transmission locks up and it is much better.

If your unsure and its close I would have a look over it if your serious about buying it.
Buy a 3.0lt auto

in blue if you can find one
