  • Hilux 3rd Gen Keys

    Hi All,

Just bought myself a 3rd Gen hilux !! but it only came with one key it also has a cobra immobiliser stick that you touch on before starting.

Does this mean the Toyota key isn't a transponder key, so I can get another one cut from any locksmith? It does have two button on it to operate the central locking.

Does anyone have any tips on where would be the best/cheapest way for me to get a spare key and immobiliser set ?

    Thank you

Has anyone seen those aftermarket alarms that feature the "flick out" Keyfob key as seen in the previous Mercedes range adn some Audi/VWs?? they come with blank keys bits so you can get them cut to work... Anyone know if there are any avaliable in Surf/toyota fitment??

Could be a pretty cool touch

also used on current model volvo and fords, i would say both blanks may well be considerably shorter than a toyota 2nd gen blank but i will do some digging.

Clifford do a transponder with a key built in for their alarms, it's designed for their motorcycle alarms but can be used on cars aswell i think.

funny reading this thread I have just had some cut for mine AND I have an alarm with the folding "VW" type keys. They came with blanks but they were back to front so only last night I cut one of the £2.99 keys with the angle grinder and fitted it into the remote, now my 3rd gen has a snazzy folding key!

I even think the fob for my Cat immobalisor will fit in the remote fob too

The immoboliser is a Cat 2

The alarm is a £25 e-bay job and the spare key £2.99
can't post a pic as I currently don't subscribe to a hosting site, but if you give me you e-mail I can mail one.

If its the main key (the one with a silver toyota emblem on one side and 2 small lock/unlock buttons on the other), then yes its not a transponder key, just cental locking. None of the Surfs came with an immoboiiser that i know of, unless the 4th gen has one. You should be able to get that copied fairly easily. For additional 3rd party (ie cobra) immobiliser fobs, I would guess you'd have to go direct to Cobra, or one of their agents / specialists.
BTW, if you get all the original keys with the Surf, you get the remote central locking fob/key like you have, a key with a Toyota plastic head, and a plain thin metal key also with the Toyota logo on it.

cool, thanks for all the info. my key has the two small central locking buttons, do you think if i took the key to toyota i could get another one? i'll get a spare cut today but would be handy if i could get another key that controlled the central locking

I don't think anyone's ever managed to get a spare remote fob from Toyota in the UK. I did hear someone on the Australian Surf site say that a dealer over there could get them (but that was a few years ago). I think it was Castle Toyota or something like that. I'd try searching on that forum, might turn up something.
