  • greasing nipples...........

    Ooooh err matron

Sorry about this, this is probably the dumbest question ever but how do I go about greasing the nipples on my truck.
I have some squeaking noises coming from underneath at low speeds and on full steering lock and suspect that I need to apply some grease and I have a 600mile drive ciming up at the weekend so would like to get it done tonight (nothing like planning ahead eh? )

So, having reached the ripe old age of 34 and having never greased a nipple how do I go about it?

I know the location of them and am armed with a grease gun and grease. Do I loosen the nipple as you would when bleeding brakes or does the gun go over the end and just squeeze without loosening it?

Also, the end of my grease gun ends in a straight tube with a thread on it. Do I need an attachment for this ?

I've tried googling and searching on here but am still none the wiser

EDIT: Forgot to add, assuming I manage the above, do I just squeeze a squirt of grease in? does the excess escape from somewhere else or do I need to remove the old grease first?

    Cheers

    Chris

Yup gun goes over the end, and you just push and squeeze. There are also some on all 4 of your ball joints but you may have to purchase a few nipples to put in place of the nuts, youll know your doin it right when grease comes out other places.

If you get creaks on full loch have a look under for the steering stops, its a commion thing, they are under the cv joint on full lock, they get dry and noisy, just dab a blob of grease on them and they shut up for a month or so.

You wanna look at doin all this 3 monthly

Thanks for that, appreciated. So I don't need an attachment for the end of the gun then ? its just I have a vague recollection of it having something on the end originally and I removed it to make it easier to squeeze grease into the CV joint on a car.
Was a long time ago though and I'm probably completely wrong !

I was wondering about the frequency too, monthly it is then at least its a hell of a lot easier to get under this than my Audi, even my fat carcasse can get under without jacking it up

      cheers

the end of the grease gun should have a small adaptor - a bit like a collet chuck with 3 or 4 small diametrically opposite jaws / claws in.

A creak on full lock is most likley to be these, there are 2 on each side of the front hub

If it creaks on a full Loch you have a serious water ingress problem (sorry but couldn't resist that one)

There are also nipples on the propshafts which could do with some grease in, there is a picture on the sunvisor to show you where

              Thanks guys, much appreciated

I went to Halfords lunchtime and bought another grease gun that has the collet thing on it. I must admit I have a nasty feeling that I'd thrown my gun away anyway as it had sat under the stairs without being touched for the last 10 Years or so

So, I'll be nipple and steering lock stop lubing tonight (not often you get to say that )

              Thanks again,

                It didn't work

The collet doesn't clip onto the nipple, are they a non-standard size?

You get metric and imperial sizes, but the surf has metric nipples and the gun you bought from Halfrauds will be for metricated ones, so it should fit. You need to push quite hard to get the nozzle to engage. Be careful not to shear the nipple off too.
To stop the noise on full lock you dont need a grease gun anyway, you just need to put a blob on the stops.

Thanks for that Jonny, thats reassuring.

I carried on with it but it just wouldn't go on. I guess there must be a problem with the collet on the gun.

It wasn't ideal trying to tackle it in the dark with a torch at the last minute either I'll clean the grease out of the collet and see if there's a problem when I get back.

                    Cheers
