you need air from forward momentum to generate air flow over wings to give lift external thrust required to break belt speed as in the skateboars senario required to achive lift

        • I only see references to conveyor doing 10 mph, plane doing 10mph, wheels going 20mph.
No jumbo takes off at 10 mph, so no it wont take off, end of thread.

That's fine. I think we reached a point where if our arguments that we have each raised have failed to sway anyone so far, then they're not going to succeed.

                Was fun to discuss anyway.

best thread in AGES and we still havnt got on to "if your wheels are turning at a combined speed,do you earn double air miles"

OK, I'll get working on my ban inducing next thread today.

                        • So there's a seaplane facing out to sea, can it take off on an incoming tide?

Moreso does it take off faster on an outgoing tide?

                          • Hahaha, this thread is still going! Glad I left when I did!

<Edit> Faster in relation to what Nero?

'Ground' speed - yes (if the ground is the sea)

                            Airspeed, no, of course not.

Again, its the speed references that make answering it difficult.

Anyway, Nige, lock the thread for gods sake!!!

                            • right.

the plane is sitting on the conveyor which is static.

you tie a rope onto the front of the plane and pull (you are strong enough to do this and you are not standing on the conveyor belt)

the wheels of the plane are moving so the conveyor moves at the same speed in the opposite direction.

this has no effect on your ability to pull the plane towards you and you continue to gather rope.

the wheels of the plane simply have to turn faster now ie: your pulling speed plus the speed of the conveyor.

now stop pulling and turn on the engines to push the plane.

plane will still move along and wheels will still have to be turning at plane speed+conveyor speed.

plane can accelerate up to take off speed and get airbourne.

wheels will be going twice the speed they would be if the runway was static but it will still take off.

I can't explain it any better.

                              • If the plane is on a belt doing 100mph the planes wheels do 100mph in opposite direction stand off the front of the belt and pull the plane it does what? Correct moves along the belt

                                WHY??
because the force moving the plane is irrelevant to the belt or the planes wheel speed.
now relpace the tow rope with a push from behind stand off the belt and push the plane with a big stick will it move forward yes the length of your stick

                                WHY?
because the force moving the plane is irrelevant to the belt or the planes wheel speed

NOW REPLACE THE TOW ROPE AND THE BIG STICK WITH THRUST FROM ENGINES ATTCKING LIKE A PULL OR A PUSH AND NOT AS A CAR DOES ON DRIVEN FRICTION AGAINST THE BELT

                                WHAT HAPPENS

YES IT MOVES SHIFTS FECKIN FLYS
NOW NO MORE I CANT TAKE IT

And for the really slow out there hang the plane from a rope on a lets say sky hook wheels up hit the go pedal will the engines move the plane forwards???
                                Okay thank god,
Now put the nose wheel down still hanging the plane form same rope spin the nose wheel at 1000mph hit the go pedal will the engine thrust move the plane??? At last the penny drops
THEN WHAT MAKES 22 OF YOU THINK THAT MORE WHEELS DOWN SPINNING MAKES A DIFFERANCE
