  • Cleaning My V8 (again)

I have been talking to a guy locally and he can do SHOT blasting for me but not bead blasting. He says they do a lot of work on iron gates etc,

Will Shot blasting be ok on my engine and leave a finish that I can polish and buff to a shiny finish?

    Cheers

If youre going to use any sort of blasting on aluminium make sure that they use new media because if there is any ferrous dust in the shot or beads it will become embedded in your engine block and cause more corrosion.

Hi, Thanks for your replies, I have been doing some more research and I agree that shot blasting is far to harsh.

Elvz, when you say new media I guess you mean brand new product rather that beads they have used before?

I get the impression that bead blasting is more specalist as I can find loads of sand and shot blasters but no bead blasters.

Is bead blasting done in a machine whereas sand/shot is done from a spray type gun?

          Cheers

          James

SHOT is sent via a high pressure compressor with hose gun attachment you have to wear an outfit like a deep sea diver which is oxygen fed due to the amount of dust. bead blasting is usually for smaller items in a cabinet i would have thought some of the shot blast companies will use different sized media (shot liitle balls either iron, steel or other)

hi mate where i work we blast with zinc oxide (various grades) and bead both in a cabinet and main blast shop the bead we use on stainless oxide on mild steel etc if someone needs a good finish i salvage the bead that has been through the main blast system this has been broken down and i have done many m/cyle heads etc....... you must remember that unless sealed afterwards the alloy will start to corode again. Many years ago i built a marina pickup with rover v8... blasted block then painted it with vht enamel this lasted all the time i had the motor there is lots of alloy that can be polished on the rover which dresses it nicely will post pic when i can find it

fenman thanks for your reply mate,

how long will it take before the block starts to corrode again?

I was planning to polish it then lacquer it, I guess it may need a few coats to seal it properly.

I have put a couple of pictures on, it has cleaned up fairly well with degreaser and a power washer will bead blasting remove the rest of the oil/cr@p?

Would you be interested in blasting it?

A pic would be good to see.

                Cheers

YES bead blast would clean that up as its only light

No it is going in my lounge

It is going to require some serious polishing and buffing but that is not a problem.

                          How come?

no problem mate, it is a bit big for their cabinet but they seem decent guys and were happy to have a go. to tidy it up.

Only £20 an hour which seems pretty cheap,

If things don't work out I may well get back in touch.

                              All the best
