  • SAT NAV - Which is best for Greenlaning

    Hi All,

Am going to be updating my Sat Nav quite soon, and am interested to know which you guys (and Gals) think is best for Laning.

I currently use a tomtom, it is great for road navigation but you can't enter OS References etc and doesn't differenciate between bridal paths, private Driveways and green lanes.

any suggestions? would like ideally to be able to store routes, as well as locations, not to bothered about road navigation, more interested in it telling me where I can and can't go.

    Thanks

    Joe

Where you can and cant go changes quite quickly, much faster than satnav maps are updated as a rule.

Why not use a NMEA enabled satnav to drive Memory Map on a laptop. You can get up to date maps from OS and use the moving map feature on memory map.

Another benefit is that routes can be stored, and shared with other MM users.

      That's the system I use.

Setup consists of Garmin Geko, Laptop and power inverter to keep laptop going more than the 3hrs battery lasts.
Software is Memory Maps 1:25,000. Have every map for the uk loaded

is this a satanv unit on its own or does it also need laptop in truck etc..

Have the invertor already so thats not a problem.. would just be a nuisense having the laptop all the time

          Thanks

I don't find the laptop too bad, but plan on fitting small screen on dash and connecting laptop to it.

Yup, without a doubt Memory Map is the way to go.

I have recently bought one of these. I have set it up running XP, and loaded Memory Map onto it. Using a small USB bluetooth adaptor I have linked it to my bluetooth GPS receiver. It all works just fine. The Eee PC is small enough that it sits just fine on top of the cup holder, held in place by a big elastic band.

I'm working on ideas for a more substantial method of mounting the Eee.

I use a HP iPAQ rx5935 Travel Companion

its a handheld PDA - that also has inbuilt GPS, it comes preloaded with TomTom,

I have Anquet maps on my PC (similar to memory map), and this includes a pocket PC version i can load on the PDA and the whole of UKfits on two 2GB memory cards.
the anquet maps are 1:50000k scale OS, and your location is shown on the map and it moves as you do

the PDA has windows mobile operating system, it also has pocket word, excel, powerpoint, outlook email, internet explorer, can have google maps etc
                  games and lots other software.
as well as GPS, it has WiFi internet access and bluetooth

                  so a good allrounder!-
the HP iPAQ rx5935 Travel Companion has now been replaced by a newer model, but new model doesnt have WIFI and no longer has windows mobile, so much less flexible in terms of installing other software

I use a Mio P350 with TomTom 6 for on road and Memory Map for off road.

Problem is you only get a very small snap shot of the off road bit.

I would like a Eee also

                          Thanks Guys..

May look at stripping down a pc and building it in to the back of the truck (one of those littke compartments by the tailgate looks promising!)

Can also use it for DVD's and Music then.

                          Already have the screens.

Bluetoohk keyboard and i think i'll be away!

Will deffo be using Memory Map after the comms on here!
