Program not responding

Hi, more and more I can't get programs on my computer to work. I just get the 'program not responding' routine. I have scanned for viruses etc but it's so slooooow. Anyone know wots causing this please?

Yes, done both. Do you think it's because there's too much info on the disc? Is there a memory thing that I could put some files on?

This happens any time a program doesn't come out of it's main loop for a while.

Causes:
- Running out of RAM (too many processes running, broken program)
- Fragmented hard-disk

or, one that's happened to a few people I know recently:
- Dying hard disk.
