  • Is this a scam?

    Hi all

I am selling my other car online (Subaru Forester), as the Surf has excelled at everything since buying it, and I can't justify/afford two 4x4 cars.

I received this email earlier today:

    Hello Owner,

I am interested in purchasing this vehicle ,it suits my requirements perfectly,I run two garages ,one in Dublin and the other in the Netherlands, i shuffle most of my time between the two .

THESE ARE MY TERMS OF TRANSACTION:

    1) I AM OKAY WITH THE STATED PRICE OF £4,250.

    2) I WILL BE PAYING WITH A BANKER'S DRAFT / CHEQUE WHICH I WILL ALLOW TO CLEAR BEFORE THE PICKUP/SHIPMENT OF THE CAR.

    3) I WILL INCLUDE FEES FOR SHIPMENT IN PAYMENT, THIS MY SHIPPING AGENCY WILL USE FOR PICK-UP.

The excess funds will go towards covering costs for shipping, shippers fees, insurance, tax and any other expenses that might be incurred getting it down to the new owner.

I will want you to get in touch with the following details if my terms are okay:

    FULL
    NAME.......................... ..
    ADDRESS....................... .
    TELEPHONE NUMBERS...................(Mob ile and Land)

As soon as i have your details,i can have payment effected immediately, all things being equal,we should have this wrapped up by the end of this week.

Please note that you'll have to send on the balance on the funds that you'll get to my shipper so he can come attend to the pick up as soon as you make the car ready.

I believe that most transaction are based on trust,so i will look forward to a successful transaction with you.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any further questions............. P.S:I can be reached on XXXXXX

    Best Regards,
    Mark.

I see no point in calling him as I'm sure he'll give the full reassuring spiel, but I find it very odd that he has not haggled, is willing to buy sight unseen, etc.
Also the forwarding of funds onto the shipper looks decidedly dodgy.

Any opinions? Anyone ever received anything similar when selling a car?

    Appreciate any help, thanks!

Sounds like a scam, i get Heep's of emails offering all sorts of things. Phone calls etc.. They all want your details to sell on and use to take out credit out in you name.

Some are more discrete than others, the latest is supposedly my bank phoning me to confirm details or tell me something important etc etc. when you ask what bank they just say "your bank" or "your personal bank" if pushed on it they often take a guess or hang up, so far they haven't got it right!
I told bank and apparently there is sh*t loads of it going on.

Just ignore emails, and don't give any info out no matter how small.
If it can be broken it can be fixed

This is the oldest scam in the book....NEVER REPLY TO THESE. You get the money via chq usually which appears to clear in your bank, you hand over the goods and then its gone only to find that the chq bounced and you owe the bank money.
              How does the scam work?

Internet Sales, Shipping Fee or Cashback fraud.
Please be aware that there is currently an internet fraud affecting all classified ad sites across the internet, if you receive an offer much higher than the asking price of your item, then you may have been targeted.

The concept of the scam is to offer you, the seller, a much higher price than you are actually asking, the buyer will always live abroad or be on a business trip in Africa, Holland or similar.
In all cases you will be asked to deal with the buyer's shipping agent, partner or friend who lives in this country which they possibly owe money too. They will send a cheque for at least double the cost and then request the excess funds refunded back to them. Obviously the cheque is a forgery which by a loophole in the law then can leave you the seller liable for these funds.

If you experience a situation similar to above please:
              • Cease all communication with these people
              • Do not any under any circumstances give them any bank, credit card or other personal details
              • Advice from the Police on this and other frauds can be found on the Metropolitan Police website

Below is an example of the first stage of the con:
              Hello,
I am intersted in purchase of your car but first i will like to know some things, which are:
--How long has car been with you?
--How many owners has the car had?
              --Has the car been damaged?
--Does the motorcar come with the spare keys?
--Do you have theb car document and is your name on it?
--When was the car last serviced? --
Why are you selling the car? --
--Which other site did you placed the advact of the car?
Lastly the bottom line price of the car? I will like you to mail me back with the anwsers to the questions above or ring my husband on this line +447024062469.Hope to read from you asap

              Thanks
              Luise

At this stage DELETE the email and do not respond and thats the end of it!
              HELEN xx

I actually have major shares in Winter Hill and Crystal Palace, Analogue and Digital, including repeater transponders. I'd be willing to offer 50% for the top 1/3rd of Emley Moor (the concrete one, not the old collapsed steel one)
