Thanks for all the technical input there i soon will have a rear mounted
spare and therein is the prob, i believe they they tend to ride up on the bonnet of the car behind thus pi$$ing off the owner off, as for cant park it!!! i've managed ok for near 2 1/2 years, but have come very close a few times,
with the spare on the rear view is even more restricted aint it?, anyway i like gimmicks,
aint anyone else got one then,
I've got one, but I never heavily used it for reversing, I tend to use the passenger rear window (in the load space) as the reflection is just right to guide you
I wouldn't recommend using it as a high tech rear mirror when driving as "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" springs to mind.
The cameras tend to be wide angle which introduces you to a new concept when passing or being passed by HGVs, the front being ahead of you and the back clearly there on the screen hehehehehehe
Don't do it Ian, for £120 you can get a tv,dvd,cd etc head unit and the camera too. The cameras are only £11 off flebay and the head unit copycat got was £90
Admittedly my setup was closer to £350 but i got a lot more gadgets, tv head unit, freeview, rear cam, sub, Eq etc. http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ad.php?t=38933
At this price your paying £109 for the mirror alone.
I got one, and use it when needed. I have it mounted up high (next to the rear wiper) pointing downwards as you get a much clearer picture of how close you actually are to stuff. I tend to use the camera when backing up to trailers more than general reversing, sometimes if it's busy or when you're just not quite sure how close you are i flick it on. I put it on a switch rather than wiring to the reverse light circuit, I only use the 2.5" screen on my headunit and it works ok.
The camera i got was the ripspeed one from halfords for around £70. One thing to note is with colour camera's, night visibility is shite even with the IR illumination. You either want a normal b&w one, or one which switches to black and white in low light conditions.
I have thought about these for when I get my screen headunit...
I have the reversing mirror anyway on my 3rd gen, but its pretty useless with the rear spare, as you can't see the end of that (will be even worse with wider, bigger tyres)
I can't see where I would mount it so it would be any more help then the mirror!
(Having night vision has to be good for parking at night... especially in unlit areas for those with tints!)
Cheer's guy's, that sounds like the better option Ant, must admit i did'nt pay a lot of attension to copycats thread on the subject as first thing i thought was i cant afford that and i'd be lost fitting it, i'll have a good read up on his report/fitting, i can do £120 but 300+ i dont think so, i'm guessing you can add bit's as you go tho, which would make it easier,
fitting the camera up high sound's good tho, i was a bit puzzled as to where to stick it, perhaps up in the spoiler?
I'll only have a standard wheel on the back for now till/if i ever find a matching rim, then it'll have either a 31 or maybe a 33 if i can coax the suspension up a bit more, (the four on the road are 31's)
Yes he's put a link to the site where he had it from. Mine was also from the bay. My cam is mounted in the rear bumper as i mainly use it for reversing upto the boat trailer.
On the subject of using your rear slung spare as a reversing guide...
Soon after fitting a 13.5" wide spare (replacing my OEM one) I was reversing in Aldi carpark and gently touched the spoiler of a Ford Escort (remember, my truck was now 4" longer than standard), popping it off its mount, and pushing it onto the rear screen just hard enough to shatter it.
Sooo, a very gentle tap on the spoiler resulted in the escort needing new rear glass, at my insurance expense.
