  • New Engine Type

I've been enquiring to my japanese contact what the newer engine types are on the surfs, as I believe the intercoolers died out after 2000. He has advised me that in the latter stages of 2000, they introduced a new engine, which would make the model number KDN 185W rather than the usual KZN 185W.Having had a read this engine is supposed to be quieter, more powerful and better on fuel consumption???.

I'd like to get one if possible, but having looked at a few sites I can't see it listed on the model reports. Does anyone know if it is available, so that this particular model could be imported.

    thanks for any info

The engine is a 1KD-FTV which, according to the dubious gospel of Wikipedia:

"First appeared in the 2000, the 1KD-FTV is one of the newest engines build byToyota. 1KD-FTV a 3.0L (2982cc) straight-4 common rail variable nozzle turbo (variable geometry turbocharger) coupled with a 32-bit ECU and Multi Pilot Injection System, diesel engine Turbo diesel engine with an Intercooler. It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft). Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm. It powers 170 hp(125 kW) at 3400 rpm, and 35.9 kg・m (352 Nm) of torque at 1800-3400 rpm. Redline of this engine is at 4200 RPM. Compression ratio is 17.9:1. This engine uses D-4D (Direct Injection 4 Stroke Common Rail Diesel Engine) electronic Common Rail (Common rail direct fuel injection ) technology, produces ultra high pressure, 135 mpa (1350 bar), which is about 8 times more than the pressure of the normal fuel injection system within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). This combined with the 32-bit ECU which controls fuel quantity, valve-timing, and accurate pressure at different engine revolutions result in the most fuel economy and also in the full utilization of power, whether it is during taking off or during taking over, without having to drag the engine revolution to the maximum. Making the achievement with the fuel consumption 11% more effective compared to its predecessor 1KZ-TE engine thus 17% more powerful. Fuel consumption is also 12% more effective than the all new Toyota Hybrid engines. The Pilot Injection System helps smooth engine running like sitting in saloon cars. The noise level is only 49 decibels at the idle speed. The Pilot Injection System produces fuel injection in advance before the main injection starts working, reducing Ignition Lag Time and resulting in continuous and complete combustion. Noise from ignition is also reduced."

No idea on the importing, but that's the lowdown on the engine.

According to the EPC the KDN185 went into production in August 2000, and the engine in it was a 1KDFTV, a 3.0l TD. Interestingly there is an intercooler shown on the EPC on this model.

Also they seem to have re-launched a narrow body version, which i thought had disappeared before the 3rd gens came out.

The engine is a direct injection common rail diesel engine.

That's about all the information i can glean off the EPC, model reports and stuff i can't help with but if i happen to stumble across any information i'll pass it on.

edit: the same engine was also used in the Land Cruiser Prado from August '00 if that helps.

The owners manual I bought from rough trax has a narrow body on the front!

From what I have heard the D4D engiens do not like veg oil!

is that the same D4D thats in the newer hiluxs?
          they are ###### rockets!

i didnt know they had that variable turbo thingy.. thats what some porsches have so they dont get lag.

and its what mr shelby put on a pinto or escort or something once and got a load of power out of a poo engine!
so you can guess how good it is!

also the engine is more square than what my 2.4 is anyway (bore almost same as stroke = square)
          Oh Nana, what's my name?

i think thats because of the common rail thingy they put in, but not sure - i dont have that lol :P

common rail diesels and veggie is a very bad combo. the toyota D4D engines are quick and supposedly very good engines too!

Variable turbos have been in fairly wide circulation for a while now...

The reason it was a big deal for Porsche was because they were the first to do it on a petrol engine, where the EGTs are waaaaay higher.

                      Nice technology though!
